Weather-wise, it may have been a grey month but the rain and storms in the UK have seen many of our staff members escape for a few days, trading the dark clouds for the beaming skies of some pretty amazing destinations. Our managing director David Ox attended a lavish wedding in Italy and discovered the delights of Milan, Lake Como and Portofino while operations executive Sophie Azeem explored everything that Munich has to offer. Personal travel manager Louise Silverman enjoyed five-nights in Palma, while graphic designer Tim Martin-Harvey took in the natural scenery of the Dolomites. Add into the mix an awards ceremony at St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel London, and the KwikFit British Tour Racing Championship at Silverstone, and you have yourself an action-packed month.

ATTENDING A WEDDING IN ITALY

While it may be hard to believe, this September marked the first time our managing director David Ox had ever been to Italy. “I went to Milan, Lake Como and Portofino for seven-nights,’ David said. ‘My wife and I were going to a wedding in Lake Como and thought why not make it a holiday? So that’s exactly what we did.”

Starting in Milan for two-nights, the couple stayed at The Bvlgari Hotel Milano for an unforgettable urban break. “Bvlgari has been one of the premier hotels in Milan for quite some time now,” David said. “It’s very central and as the hotel is in a residential area, it’s almost like an oasis. It’s got some beautiful gardens and overall it’s very peaceful.”

After shopping and pounding the pavements of one of Italy’s top cities, it was time to venture to the stunning region of Lake Como. “We checked into Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como. It’s one of the best settings you can get for a hotel,” David said. “Lake Como is a wow place anyway, and they gave us a Lake View Terrace Room which is brilliant as we had our own terrace which had incredible views.”

Portofino was the last stop of David’s Italy trip. Staying at Belmond Splendido, it was a holiday with plenty of sun and splendour. “Belmond Splendido is an epic hotel. It’s set at the back of Portofino with amazing views of the harbour,” David said. “We got an amazing room. They upgraded us to an Executive Junior Suite which was a corner suite. One of the unique perks of these hotels is that you can have breakfast in your room for no extra charge so we actually enjoyed breakfast on the terrace which was lovely.”

SAYING CHEERS IN MUNICH

Bavaria’s capital of Munich is known for many things. Oktoberfest, archaic landmarks such as the Marienplatz Square and plenty of culture to soak up. September saw operations executive Sophie Azeem spend three-nights in the city with friends who all thoroughly enjoyed it. “Munich was great,” Sophie said. “We stayed in a hotel close to the city centre, drank a lot and explored. We rode on scooters around the city too which was really fun and something I’ll never forget.”

Sophie also spent some time in Munich’s English Garden. Larger than New York’s Central Park, there are plenty of things to do from renting a paddle boat to enjoying a pint at one of the four beer gardens. “The English Garden was gorgeous,” Sophie said. “The restaurants are amazing, too. They all serve typical German food which was delicious. Munich in general is a great place to go for an easy weekend away. The social aspect is brilliant, and it has a very chilled out vibe. I would definitely recommend it.”

ENJOYING GOOD FOOD IN PALMA

Five-nights of unparalleled relaxation was lapped up by personal travel manager Louise Silverman who recently ventured to Palma. The first two nights were spent at a hotel right near the marina, harbour and cathedral. “During those two-nights myself and my friends walked through the cobbled streets and went into some boutiques which was great,” Louise said. “We also sat in a square and had some brilliant tapas. Patron pepper, calamari and tortilla espanola… it was delicious.”

The following three nights saw Louise call Park Hyatt Mallorca home. Situated in the mountains, brilliant views came as standard and customer service was high. “The hotel was insane,” Louise said. “It was set up like a traditional Mallorca village, although the rooms were contemporary, and it’s quite quiet too so couples will love it. For the best views with dinner, make sure to head to Asia restaurant as it overlooks the mountains and the sea, and if you’re looking to really push the boat out then book a stay in the Presidential Suite. It even has a Jacuzzi on the terrace!”

CAMPING IN THE DOLOMITES

It seemed like Italy was the destination of the month as graphic designer Tim Martin-Harvey also ventured here for seven-nights. However, there was one major difference though as Tim decided to camp and stay in eco-friendly bungalows. Touring the Dolomites, Venice, Milan and Lake Garda, this whirlwind escape was certainly action-packed. “The highlight of my trip was when we hiked and camped in Nova Levante,” Tim said. “The views were amazing, the scenery was beautiful, the weather was lovely… it was the perfect day.”

As well as mountain views, urban sites were in abundance as Tim also went to Venice and Milan on his trip. “It was great sightseeing in both cities. In Venice, there was a fantastic takeaway pasta place, and the Duomo cathedrals in Milan looked wicked. We also stayed in a two-bedroom eco lodge in Venice complete with a Jacuzzi which we took full advantage of.”

WATCHING THE RACES AT SILVERSTONE

September 28th and 29th saw the KwikFit British Touring Championship take place at the Silverstone Circuit. Four of our lucky customers, along with personal travel manager Dean Jeffries went along to spectate the races on the 29th, which was a roaring success. The chance to see saloon car racing along with five-star hospitality and customer service… what’s not to love?

“Apart from the weather, the day went without a hitch,” Dean said. “The customers that came really enjoyed it, too. Some of them even emailed me the next morning to say how good the event was. A big thank you to the BRDC for hosting the event. The Clubhouse hospitality was fantastic, and the food was perfect.”

CROSSING OUR FINGERS AT THE ASPIRE AWARDS

We were honoured to be nominated for two awards at the Aspire Awards 2019, and September saw the big results announced. Shortlisted in the ‘Concierge Agency Of The Year’ category and also in ‘Best Use Of Content’ thanks to our online blog and annual lifestyle brochure, the grand reveal took place at St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel London.

300 guests attended including six members of the Winged Boots team and even though we didn’t win, a great time was had by all. “Although we didn’t take home the trophy, we had a fantastic evening at the Aspire Awards,” marketing manager Lauren Godfrey said. “Thank you so much to the Aspire team for recognising Winged Boots and shortlisting us in two categories. The entire evening was very well organised and we’re honoured to have been a part of it – roll on next year!”
