There’s always something going on in Washington, D.C. so there’s no bad time to visit. If you’re keen to see the cherry blossom, we recommend visiting the capital in March. Summer is the warmest and busiest time to visit so it’s ideal if you want to get outdoors and don’t mind crowds. The Fourth of July celebrations are pretty spectacular. For fun festive activities, we recommend November or December. Thanksgiving has some fantastic parades and the lead-up to Christmas is magical.
The easiest way to get around is by the Metrobus and Metrorail. The network is managed by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). A lot of the city is compact enough to explore on foot or by bike. It’s possible to rent a car if you plan to explore beyond the city but traffic can get quite hectic!
There is so much to see and do in the city. We recommend visiting the top landmarks like the White House, the United States Capitol, the Supreme Court, the National Mall, the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. The Smithsonian Museum is a fun day out. The zoo, in particular, will be a hit with the kids.
