St. Maarten Holidays

The island of St Maarten—or St Martin—is home to nearly forty spectacular beaches and some of the bluest waters in the Caribbean, making it a must-visit destination for sun-drenched relaxation and fun. Its binational European status adds to its allure and St Maarten delivers an eclectic, multicultural vibe throughout its world-class food, exciting nightlife, stunning nature, and inspiring arts and culture scene.

The French side, St Martin, is somewhat quieter and known for its excellent nature activities, pristine beaches and luxurious tranquillity, while the Dutch side, St Maarten, offers a vibrant atmosphere with casinos, a bustling nightlife, and plenty of all-inclusive hotel resorts.

Gastronomy is a major draw of this Caribbean gem. Across its modest 37 square miles, you’ll find hundreds of amazing restaurants, cafés and bars, each showcasing a world of flavour and unique culinary styles that reflect traditions and tastes of settlers from more than 100 countries. Fresh produce is used throughout, offering an authentic taste of this magical island—expect plenty of French delights, refreshing Dutch beers, seafood delicacies, and vibrant creole eateries to discover.

The island is renowned for its high standards of hospitality, whether in its five-star resorts, boutique hotels or family-run villas. St Maarten is also considered one of the best duty-free shopping destinations in the Caribbean, with its lively cruise port in Philipsburg at the heart of retail adventures.

For something a little more thrilling, St Maarten is a haven for water sports enthusiasts and boasts a wealth of beachside activities to try such as sailing, canoeing, kayaking and jet-skiing. Want to dive deeper? There are many opportunities for exploration beneath the crystal-clear waves on scuba diving and snorkelling adventures where you can see captivating shipwrecks, colourful coral reefs and tropical marine life, too.

St. Maarten in a Nutshell

St Maarten’s beaches offer the quintessential Caribbean experience, from the lively amenities and boardwalk at Great Bay Beach in the capital Philipsburg to the famous Maho Beach, which sits at the end of the airport runway where you can watch the planes landing right over your head.

Orient Bay Beach is another popular spot and presents one of the longest stretches of beach on the island. With sun loungers and soft sands lapped by crystal-clear waters as far as the eye can see, this is the definition of idyllic. A wide range of water sports are on offer here too—it’s one of St Maarten’s premier kitesurfing spots—and there is an abundance of restaurants lining the coast, so you can easily make a whole day of it.

Excellent restaurants and bars can be found all over the island, particularly along the boardwalk in Philipsburg, as well as Simpson Bay, Maho, Orient Bay, Marigot, and Grand Case. For a beautiful waterfront dining experience, head to Skip Jack’s, which is set by the lagoon in Simpson Bay and delivers mouthwatering seafood as well as delicious steaks, ribs, pasta and salads.

Toppers Restaurant & Bar is a lively landmark venue that is most famous for its rum distillery and features a fantastic menu of freshly caught lobsters, plus a dinner-dance show every Thursday for all-night singing and dancing.

And if buzzing nightlife is high on your agenda during your stay, you’ll be delighted with what’s on offer in St Maarten. Most of the action can be found on the Dutch side of the island, with its profusion of live music haunts, casinos, and nightclubs to keep you going all night long. A quieter atmosphere can be found at sophisticated resort lounges or waterfront cafés, where the smooth sounds of reggae and gentle sea breeze will accompany your cocktails in style.

St Maarten offers a variety of activities beyond its shoreline. You can play golf, try your hand at padel ball, go on bike rides or hikes, or join an excursion. If you’re a fan of physical activities in the thick of nature and with stunning views, purchase a day pass for the award-winning Rainforest Adventure Park, which is home to the world’s steepest zipline and the Soualiga Sky Explorer chairlift for 360° views over St Maarten and neighbouring islands.

There are ten hiking trails around the island that cater to all ability levels. One of the best hikes takes you up Pic Paradis, the highest peak on St Maarten. It’s a relatively easy climb and you’ll be rewarded by your efforts with magnificent views from the top. And from Guana Bay to Point Blanche, you can also take a short hike to the shimmering Natural Pool, which provides you with a tranquil spot for a refreshing dip in the waters of this natural wonder.
