St. Kitts & Nevis Holidays

The smallest country in the Americas, St. Kitts—alongside its sister island, Nevis—is a beautiful landmass set over just twenty-three square miles and was the first English colony in the Caribbean. The people here are warm, friendly, and fiercely proud of their nation with its tropical rainforests, impossibly gorgeous beaches, vibrant towns and villages, and thought-provoking historical sites.

Peace and tranquillity embody this beautiful destination, allowing you to relax, play or explore to your heart’s content, whether travelling with the family, romancing on a couples’ escape or simply cruising through on a day trip. Kittians refer to it as ‘limin’’—the art of enjoying life, from simply hanging out and chatting in the warmth of the sun to feeling the breeze of the sea air as you loll in a hammock by the beach.

But don’t be fooled by St. Kitts’ outward serenity. The island is constantly abuzz with activity, from food festivals and cricket tournaments to energetic eco tours and luxury catamaran cruises, there’s something extraordinary to do every single day.

The island’s coastline comprises a yin-and-yang mix of volcanic black sands to long golden stretches, each promising total sun-soaked relaxation. Beyond the picture-perfect beaches there is a wonderful array of historical sites to discover including the charming principal city of Basseterre, a great place for people-watching and seeing interesting memorials and landscaped gardens.

The Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—is set about 30 minutes’ drive from Basseterre and is home to one of the most impressive and important landmarks on the island, while the century-old St. Kitts Scenic Railway presents a quaint 18-mile ride through the northern part of the island on its double-decker carriages, where you can take in the fertile backdrop from a unique perspective.

St. Kitts & Nevis in a Nutshell

Beach time in the sunshine is always a must in St. Kitts and Nevis, and there are plenty of spots on both islands from which to live out your Caribbean dreams. On St. Kitts, Banana Bay’s powder-white sands and warm, shallow waters promise a relaxing experience and offer a great place for snorkelling. Just around the corner you’ll find the livelier Cockleshell Bay with its beach bars, cafés, and ample water sports opportunities—this is also a wonderful spot for viewing Nevis across the water, but the beach can get busy on days when the big cruise ships dock so plan ahead!

If you’re after seclusion, the striking black sands and swaying palm trees of Dieppe Bay Beach sweep around a pretty cove, offering a splendid location for oceanside rejuvenation.

Take the ferry across to Nevis and spend the day on the beautiful taupe-coloured sands of Pinney’s Beach. Located just north of the capital Charlestown, this picture-postcard setting stretches for about four miles and promises a tranquil day by its calm, crystal-clear waters. And its smattering of beach bars to the northern end makes for a lovely all-day spot.

For the perfect combination of culture and relaxation, head to the stunning Bath Hotel in Charlestown; no reservation is required to meander round the ruins of this 18th-century grand hotel, and you can even finish your tour with a dip in the therapeutic hot springs.

Exploring St. Kitts and Nevis can be done in many different forms. Take to the water on a paddle board, kayak or jet ski and feel that ocean spray in your hair. Dive deeper with a snorkelling or scuba diving trip on one of 25 sites around St. Kitts to see an abundance of marine life and a few spectacular shipwrecks. Landlubbers can stick to drier terrain and hike the island’s rugged landscapes or enjoy the view from above on a thrilling zip-lining adventure through the rainforest. Active types will love the 2.5-mile trek through the rainforest up to Mt Liamuiga—an extinct volcano and the highest point in St. Kitts—where your efforts will be rewarded with glorious views over the island and across to Nevis and even Antigua on a clear day.

Touring around St. Kitts to visit its historic and natural attractions is a breeze whether you prefer to go solo in your own vehicle or as part of a guided group. A popular stop along the west coast is the beautiful Romney Manor, set within a sprawling 17th-century estate over eight lush acres, it’s also home to the largest living organism on the island, a 400-year-old Saman tree.

Long after the sun goes down, you’ll find much of the action along ‘De Strip’ at Frigate Bay South, a wide expanse of sand flanked by lively beach bars that keep the party going well into the night with music, drinks, and spirited island vibes.
