frequently asked questions

In Summer, the sun hardly even sets so this provides longer days and milder temperatures, making it a great time to visit for hiking, driving, and horse riding in the highlands. In Winter, the dark skies bring a higher chance to witness the northern lights, but with that also comes short days and much colder weather. Winter is the best time to experience ice caving, snowmobiling and heli-skiing.
Traditional Icelandic cuisine includes a lot of seafood, lamb, and dairy. Unique dishes include skyr (a type of yogurt), lamb stew, and lots of fresh fish dishes. Adventurous eaters may try local delicacies like fermented shark (hákarl) or puffin, though these are less common.
It is always sensible to travel with clothing that can be layered, a waterproof jacket, sturdy shoes, gloves, hat, and swimwear for trips to the spa, sauna or hot springs. If you are travelling in winter we suggest you add additional thermal layers, a heavy winter coat, scarf, and waterproof boots to your packing list.
Iceland is considered one of the best places in the world to view the Northern Lights. Although a sighting is never truly guaranteed, for the best chance you should visit when conditions are optimal between October and March. We suggest taking an organised tour on a clear night away from city lights.
