The cities of Rovinj, Pula and Rijeka are packed full of treasures, with bustling streets full of boutiques and cafés, as are cities further to the south, such as Split, Zadar, Dubrovnik and Šibenik. In Pula you can find one of the most complete Roman amphitheatres in Europe, rivalling the Colosseum in Rome. Split's Old Town comprises a 4th-century palace built by a Roman Emperor.

The unique history and sublime beauty of the region are why it’s been so beloved by film directors and TV producers over the years, with many of the country's beautiful places used as settings for Game of Thrones, Robin Hood, Star Wars and James Bond.

Croatia’s coast is the ideal destination for laid-back holidays thanks to the gorgeous climate and stunning scenery. Take a dip in the Adriatic Sea and lounge in the sun, with nothing but the sound of the waves to disturb you. In the northern region of Istria, the terrain is smoother, with pristine beaches lining the shores and lush olive and lemon groves carpeting the rolling hills.

The myriad of islands offshore is carpeted in forests of pine, olive and cypress. Perfect family outings can be had by catching a ferry over to Mljet, Lokrum or Šipan and having a relaxing picnic surrounded by nature.

Croatia In A Nutshell

Tastes To Try

Croatian cuisine is a unique offshoot of Mediterranean gastronomy, drawing on centuries of influence from neighbouring cultures from the Ancient Greeks through to the Ottomans. There is a wealth of pasta dishes popular throughout the country, echoing the influence of neighbouring Italy. The potato-based njoki pasta is often served with pašticada – a rich beef and vegetable dish popular on special occasions, particularly Saints’ Days.

No guide to Croatian gastronomy would be complete without mentioning the delicious seafood. Practically every restaurant, bar and café will serve it in some capacity thanks to the long coastline and rich waters of the Adriatic Sea. If you’re a lover of fish, then you won’t want to miss out on the remarkable variety of dishes, including crni rižot (Cuttlefish Risotto) and brodet – a fish stew made with monkfish, red racasse and hake.

Soak Up The Culture

Each city and town offers a wealth of cultural gems just waiting to be discovered. Thanks to the rich investments of successive empires in the region, from the Romans and Byzantines to the Ottomans and Austrians, every imaginable architectural style is present. One of the key sites of the region is the city of Split, where the greater part of the Old City is located within the walls of the palace of the Roman Empire Diocletian – built as a retirement home for himself in the 4th century.

Film and TV buffs will recognise many of the region's scenery featured in films and TV shows. Sites across Dalmatia are famously used as filming locations for Game of Thrones, with Cersei’s throne room located in the cellar of a Split winery, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the city of Dubrovnik standing in for King’s Landing.

Adventure Awaits

Croatia’s beautiful scenery creates many picturesque routes for walking and cycling, particularly along the rugged coastline. In Mljet Island National Park you can find an ethereal saltwater lake in which sits a tiny island capped by a 12th-century Benedictine Monastery – now open as an eatery during the summer.

One of the best ways to take in the beautiful scenery along the Dalmatian coastline is by taking to the water. Whether it’s by hopping on a ferry to one of the many islands that adorn the coastline or by hiring a jet ski and whizzing about with your mates, the views of the gorgeous cliffs and mountains will take your breath away.

If you love to get your heart pounding and adrenaline surging through you, try out some of the awesome rock climbing courses around the country. There’s something for all ages and abilities, from smaller and simpler courses to the awe-inspiring crag faces at Paklenica and Kvarner. Maybe you prefer a more leisurely ascent. You’ll love the many hiking trails that crisscross the landscape, providing gorgeous photo opportunities to fill up your friends’ social feeds.
