  • Published 18 June 2018

The Maldives is a destination that holiday dreams are made of. Endless cerulean waters and golden sands sweep holiday makers off their feet from the moment they touch down at Malé International Airport. With more than 1,000 islands under its belt, budding explorers will be in their element with a getaway here. From the over-water villas of the five-star resorts and the endless ocean that’s teeming with wildlife, to sandbank picnics and an Instagram butler service, an unforgettable time is guaranteed. What’s more, the photos you upload to Instagram will definitely inspire some wanderlust from your friends back home and luckily our personal travel managers have highlighted some of the top places to ensure that double tap.

InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort

InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort is one of the newest luxury hotel openings, and the first property in the region for the iconic hotel brand. Located in the UNESCO biosphere reserve of Raa Atoll, seclusion and elegance go hand in hand here. The hotel also has another first as it's currently the only all-club InterContinental Resort. This means that every single guest receives benefits such as complimentary afternoon tea, after-dinner drinks and all day refreshments.

In terms of accommodation there are 81 beach, lagoon and overwater villas and residences to choose from. All boast heavenly decor that you'll want to sneak back in you suitcase - this isn't advised as you may be over the baggage allowance - with families catered for too with two and three-bedroom residences that come with a kitchen, a dining and outdoor living space and a lavish bathroom. Add into the mix five dining destinations, a spa and the chance to embark on sustainable excursions and you have yourself the picture-perfect getaway.

Scuba diver with a whale shark in Maldives

Explore the ocean waters

Known as one of the best scuba diving destinations on the planet, the Maldives gives holiday makers endless opportunities to explore the cerulean waters. Various PADI dive centres can be found throughout the atolls, with lessons available for those not certified. December to March offers the best visibility and driest weather however diving is still good all year round.

Along with this there is a wealth of marine life to make friends with including the likes of whale sharks, sea turtles and stingrays. The best time to relish these natural beauties is from May through to October and make sure to head to the eastern side of the atolls for a definite sighting thanks to the high concentration of plankton. Be sure to take a Go-Pro with you as the underwater scenes are simply incredible.

Mudhdoo Beach on Dusit Thani Maldives

Dusit Thani Maldives can be found on the island of Mudhdhoo and offers a real treat to all it’s guests. Looking like something straight out of a Disney film, Mudhdoo Beach glows a fluorescent blue colour once the sun sets and is often referred to as the ‘firefly’ effect. The reason? Ostracod crustaceans otherwise known as seed shrimp give off the illumination due to a chemical reaction that cause light to be fragmented. Even if science isn’t your thing you’ve got to admit that the beach is pretty unique and a definite must to head to if staying at the hotel.

Seaplane arrival in the Maldives

Relish sky-high scenes

Your holiday begins even before you get to your hotel as the seaplane transfers from Malé International Airport are simply out-of-this-world. The views from your window are guaranteed to be spectacular and will no doubt set your holiday off perfectly.

The majority of hotels have their own private seaplane service, with a chaperone escorting you from the airport right through to your seat and ensures that everything runs smoothly. A real experience to remember, the planes look like something from an old-school film and some pilots have been known to drive the vessel in bare feet. It’s all 100-percent safe, of course.
