Athens has never been a city content to become a relic. For all the marble temples and ancient names, the Greek capital feels remarkably alive – sprawling towards the mountains, spilling down to the sea and carrying on beneath the Acropolis as it has for thousands of years.

The Parthenon may command the skyline, but Athens reveals itself at street level. Motorbikes weave through traffic; coffee tables colonise the pavements; balconies overflow with plants. Dinner might begin with grilled octopus, warm bread and bowls of tzatziki passed around the table, before drifting into drinks somewhere with the Acropolis glowing above the rooftops. In Kolonaki, smart restaurants and boutiques gather beneath Lycabettus Hill; elsewhere, old workshops have become bars, galleries and creative spaces. Athens can feel polished one moment and pleasingly scruffy the next.

Follow the coast south and apartment blocks give way to palms, marinas and the blue of the Saronic Gulf. Along the Athens Riviera, afternoons belong to beach clubs and waterfront tables, while Cape Sounion waits farther along the coast with the Temple of Poseidon poised dramatically above the Aegean.

Perhaps that is Athens’ greatest surprise. Come expecting the ancient world and you’ll certainly find it – but you may leave remembering the city built around it.
