Got the t-shirt: Inside W Amsterdam

  • Published 15 December 2017

Whether you’re travelling for work or leisure, for a week-long break or even just overnight, W Amsterdam is eagerly awaiting to cater to your every whim. And when we say cater, we mean go above and beyond to exceed your expectations. Thanks to the brand’s dedicated Whenever/Wherever service that blows the usual concierge offerings out the water, alongside its sumptuous spa, fashionable bar and comfortable rooms and suites, this is one of the only hotels worth having on your radar when visiting the Dutch capital. But to prove it, marketing manager Lauren Godfrey checked-in to check it out… all in the name of research, of course.

First impressions

Let me the set the scene. It’s 9am and I’m a first-timer to Amsterdam… the last thing I want after my extremely early 3am alarm is a difficult check-in, and thankfully my arrival at W Amsterdam was faultless. Located on the sixth floor, the check-in area showcases panoramic views across the city, and gave me a sneak peak at the W Lounge – but more on that later.

Spread across two adjacent buildings, every minor detail has been thoroughly thought out here. Just take the welcome mat in the elevator for example. It changes throughout the day to say Good Morning, Good Afternoon and Good Evening at the appropriate times, however it’s the small details in the bedrooms and suites which really make for a comfortable stay.

The W brand is always on-trend and sets the bar for hotel cool, and this is definitely true of W Amsterdam. The W Lounge is testament to that. Located on the sixth floor of the Exchange Building, here you’ll find a range of different seating areas. From armchairs and ottomans lining the floor to ceiling windows, to a cosy fire pit section and raised platform in the middle of the space – there’s a different area for every occasion. I made it my mission to try almost every comfy stool, chair and bench during my stay and can honestly say that there’s no bad spot to spend an evening. My favourite were the secluded lounge areas complete with vibrant purple sofa – it’s ideal for groups and business meetings. My top tip, while you’re here, be sure to try as many of the signature cocktails as you can.

Behind closed doors

Inside the deluxe rooms and suites, almost every amenity is controlled from a touch pad conveniently located next to what can only be described as the most dreamy bed I have ever slept in. Turning on the lights, opening the blinds, calling housekeeping and even popping on the ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign can all be achieved in one simple touch – perfect for lazy mornings when you’re desperately craving a croissant… ok it was pizza (keep your judgemental thoughts to yourself please).

I stayed in a Wonderful Exchange room which comprised an open-plan living space with modern furnishings and contemporary décor. Details here were subtle yet stylised. From the phone-boothesque showers which had travel quotes, life mantras and other whimsical thoughts etched into the frosted glass to the bed spread that showcases short stories about the city and Dutch culture, every inch of this room is on brand and contributed to my overall Amsterdam experience. The clever use of space made this 320-square-foot room feel large and comfortable and the oversized built-in wardrobe was a great way to store clothes and luggage out of sight.

Calling all spa lovers

The AWAY Spa offered a welcomed retreat after a long morning of sightseeing and wandering along the cobbled ‘Dam streets. Located on the ground floor of the Bank building, this haven was just what the doctor ordered. I booked myself in for the Spa Treatment and High Tea at The Duchess package which included a choice of spa offerings. I opted for the 60-minute ‘Local’ Swedish Massage which was probably the best choice I made all holiday. The expert hands of the therapist kneaded away every knot and soothed me into a state of utter tranquillity. After my treatment I made full use of the urban sanctuary’s heated pool before drying off and heading upstairs for an afternoon tea extravaganza.

For those of you who snuff at package deals, let me tell you that this spa offer is one you should grab with both hands. As we stepped foot inside The Duchess I was taken aback by the stunning interior. It’s grand, very very grand, and nothing like you would expect from a restaurant in Amsterdam although contradictorily everything you would expect from the W. The Tearoom is sophisticated, elegant and oozes class, you can tell that it is inspired by the Belle Époque era. Here I indulged in a champagne afternoon tea like never before. Starting with scones and local preserves, my experience took a turn for the utter delicious when the attentive waitress presented me with a cake stand brimming with miniature sandwiches, savouries and delectable sweet treats. Three more plates followed, offering everything from sliders to handmade jammie dodgers, until the ultimate (and final) course was delivered; a mound of candyfloss. The pot of tea was generously replenished at multiple intervals during the experience and my glass of champagne never seemed to end… a ten out of ten afternoon for sure!

After-dark hangout

Once the sun sets, W Amsterdam comes alive – along with the rest of the city. W Lounge is where the party is at thanks to its hip DJs playing the latest hits and menu of delectable cocktails. However, if you want a true party, head to MAD FOX. Just like tumbling down the rabbit hole, here the focus is on top-quality table service to offer a high-end style of clubbing… and boy do they deliver. Be sure to dress to impress as this is definitely the place where the cool crowd congregate. Open until 4am on Thursdays and until 5am on Fridays and Saturdays, there’s no excuse not to pop by at least once during your city stay.

Final thoughts

It’s worth noting that the lighting in the W’s rooms may be flattering for your selfie, however proves rather dim come sundown. Creating a smokey eye and faultless eyeliner flick past 8pm is an achievement to say the least… ladies, I recommend playing by the eyes or lips rule and opting for the standard mascara and red lippie routine. Lighting aside, W Amsterdam is top choice for those visiting the city. Everything you could possibly need is at your beck and call, the main train station is just a 10-minute walk away and you’re right on top of Dam square and a host of city hot spots… what more could you possibly need?
