Holiday showdown: Maldives vs Seychelles vs Mauritius

Inspiration | 06 November 2025

The Indian Ocean has long been a favourite among luxury travellers and for good reason. With turquoise lagoons, swaying palms and some of the world’s most exclusive resorts, it’s a region that promises both escapism and indulgence in equal measure. Whether you're a honeymooner chasing romance, a family seeking barefoot adventure, or a sunseeker in pursuit of serenity, the question often arises: Maldives vs Seychelles vs Mauritius which should you choose? At Winged Boots, our Travel Managers have visited all three extensively, experiencing not just the postcard-perfect beaches, but the service, excursions and subtle cultural nuances that define each destination. In this guide, we break down the key highlights, must-do experiences, and signature stays across these Indian Ocean jewels so you can make an informed, inspired decision.

Maldives

If you're dreaming of a holiday that redefines indulgence, the Maldives delivers in every sense. Imagine powder-soft white sand beneath your feet, cyan-blue waters rich with vibrant marine life and overwater villas that blur the line between indoors and ocean. It’s no surprise the Maldives is one of the world’s most sought-after destinations for luxury honeymoons.

Each resort in this idyllic archipelago occupies its own private island, many accessible only by seaplane or speedboat, adding an extra layer of exclusivity. Expect five-star service, Michelin-level dining, and world-class wellness programmes designed to soothe, restore and utterly spoil you. While it's known as a honeymooners' paradise, many islands in the Maldives are also well-suited to family holidays with children of all ages; offering a range of watersports, enriching kids' programmes and conservation initiatives designed to inspire young minds.

With average temperatures hovering around 28°C year-round, the best time to visit the Maldives is between December and April, when the skies are clearest and the sun most reliable ideal for snorkelling, diving, or simply basking on your deck with nothing but the sound of the waves for company. Direct flights from London take around 10.5 hours.

Ithaa Undersea Restaurant
Ithaa Undersea Restaurant

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island

BEST FOR: Culinary delights

Split over two islands, and boasting the world’s only underwater suite The Muraka, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island redefines the term 'barefoot luxury'. The outstanding facilities and acute attention to detail throughout your stay will have you never wanting to leave. Turning the luxe dial up another gear is the resort’s remarkable gastronomy.

Seven restaurants are complemented by four bars alongside a private dining beach experience that’s ideal for marking a milestone. And, of course, no stay at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island would be complete without kicking off your shoes and descending below sea level to Ithaa, the world’s first all-glass underwater restaurant. Intimate and mesmerising, you’ll spot manta rays, turtles, reef sharks and a host of tropical marine life as you dine on contemporary fusion cuisine.

Alternatively, Koko Grill offers an intimate, under-the-stars dining experience for just 10 guests, serving Japanese-inspired teppanyaki cooked before your eyes, while the island’s Cheese & Wine Bar boasts over 100 artisan cheeses curated by its resident maître de fromage.

COMO Maalfushi Water Villa
COMO Maalfushi Water Villa

COMO Maalifushi

BEST FOR: Ocean adventures

The only resort within the unspoilt Thaa Atoll, COMO Maalifushi is well regarded for its diving and surf breaks. Waterbabies, this one is for you!

The 60-minute seaplane journey from Malé is well worth the trip as COMO’s secluded location means that marine life can thrive, so divers and snorkellers can expect sightings of whale sharks, manta rays, pods of dolphins, graceful turtles and a whole host of other undersea creatures. We honestly wouldn’t be surprised if you saw a real-life mermaid! From April to October, surf’s up. With more than 20 surf breaks to choose from, there’s a wave for all abilities – as well as experienced instructors to help you find your balance.

And of course, you'll find a series of comfortable rooms suites, and villas (both overwater and on the beach) waiting to catch you after a day exploring the Indian Ocean. The resort’s wellness hub, COMO Shambhala Retreat, provides spa therapies in serene overwater treatment rooms and open air yoga pavilions to rejuvenate both mind and body. Dining is a highlight too, with three distinct outlets serving up fresh, globally inspired cuisine – including Tai, a Japanese‑style restaurant with sunset views. Try the yellowfin tuna roll, lobster tempura and ocean trout teriyaki - you can thank us later.

Our review on the Maldives

Our personal travel manager and dedicated concierge Claire Baker recently enjoyed a two-week trip to four fabulous Maldives hotels.

"Our trip started with four nights at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island where we stayed in an Overwater Villa. The Conrad’s location means it is exceptional for discovering a variety of marine life – you can even swim with whale sharks accompanied by a marine biologist when in season.

"A must-visit is Ithaa, the world’s first underwater restaurant. We went for dinner and enjoyed a seven-course set menu. I was also fortunate enough to visit The Muraka, the only underwater villa in the Maldives. Accessed via a private jetty, it has a bedroom and bathroom completely submerged under the lagoon and an equally impressive upper level.

"We then checked into Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi, where you can cycle the entire island and uncover its hidden corners. It truly feels like your own private playground. Once again, the gastronomy exceeded all expectations. The Nest, a one-of-a-kind treehouse restaurant tucked among the treetops, offered an unforgettable dining experience and having a world-class outpost of ZUMA on the island was the ultimate bonus.

"Next up, we visited the Fari Islands which is a brand-new concept for the archipelago. We spent three nights at Patina Maldives which has a trendy Bali beach club vibe. The spa is amazing, too. I indulged in a relaxing full-body massage.

"We also visited the Fari Marina island, which has a wealth of restaurants and a beach club, before heading to my favourite resort of the four: The Ritz-Carlton Fari Islands. We stayed in the Lagoon Villa and awoke to endless views of the ocean and dolphins playing. The resort is traditionally Maldivian but with a contemporary edge and the service is just out of this world. I didn’t want to leave."

Whether you're torn between Mauritius or Maldives, or weighing up Seychelles or Maldives for your dream escape, one thing’s certain: the Maldives delivers unmatched luxury, privacy and picture-perfect tranquillity. But if you're craving a little more adventure with your castaway experience, the Seychelles might just surprise you next.

Where should I go in the Seychelles?
Where should I go in the Seychelles?

Seychelles

Much like the Maldives, the Seychelles is home to an impressive collection of luxury private island resorts, many of which are larger and more topographically diverse than their Maldivian counterparts. While both destinations offer five-star barefoot luxury, Seychelles distinguishes itself with its dramatic natural beauty – think granite boulders, wild jungle interiors and sugar-white beaches that feel utterly untouched.

For travellers comparing the Seychelles vs Maldives for their honeymoon, it’s worth noting that the Seychelles is often considered the more adventurous choice. It’s ideal for couples who want to balance serenity with exploration: island hopping between Mahé, Praslin and La Digue; hiking through rainforest trails; or diving in marine parks rich with biodiversity.

Whether you're staying at a romantic retreat on La Digue or snorkelling the vibrant coral reefs surrounding Praslin, the archipelago offers a blend of escapism and activity that's perfect for couples seeking more than just a sun lounger. And for those travelling with little ones in tow, Seychelles also boasts a number of family-friendly resorts with kids’ clubs, educational nature experiences and calm, shallow beaches ideal for younger swimmers.

The best time to visit Seychelles is during its calmer shoulder seasons: March to May and October to December. Expect balmy temperatures averaging around 30°C, warm waters and fewer crowds just right for a secluded, sun-soaked escape. Direct flights from London are available, and can take as little as nine hours, though most have at least one stop which takes the journey time to around 12-13 hours.

Constance Lémuria

BEST FOR: Culinary delights

Nestled on Praslin’s scenic coast, Constance Lémuria ticks a lot of holiday boxes. There’s a sensational kids’ club for children aged from 4 to 11 with a daily schedule of activities spanning arts and crafts, gaming, cookery workshops and more.

Budding McIlroys will be thrilled to hear that there’s an 18-hole golf course within the hotel’s stunning grounds complete with complimentary green fees and lessons available if you’re feeling a bit rusty. However, it’s the foodies that will really be in their element.

Constance Lémuria offers a trio of standout dining experiences: The Legend serves all-day dishes from live show kitchens alongside an ever-evolving pastry menu (don’t miss the famed chocolate extravaganza), while DIVA pairs modern Mediterranean cuisine with a world-class wine cellar in a stylish setting. Perched on a rocky peninsula between Anse Kerlan’s twin beaches, The Nest specialises in fresh seafood and Creole specialities, with panoramic ocean views that make it a favourite for romantic dinners and special occasions.

Snorkelling at Alphonse Island
Snorkelling at Alphonse Island

Alphonse Island

BEST FOR: Ocean adventures

Alphonse Island is a private island retreat which proudly states that it is one of the most remote inhabited islands within the entire Seychelles archipelago. Expect miles of unblemished shoreline, lagoons and salt flats. This exclusive resort has a single lodge at its centre and offers beach bungalows, beach suites and beach villas all of which are just a few sand-covered steps away from the glittering Indian Ocean.

Arrival is via a 60-minute scheduled flight and during the journey, you’ll be able to gaze at Alphonse Island’s top attraction: its topaz blue ocean surroundings. Take it all in on a sunset cruise or pick up a new skill by trying your hand at fly fishing. Alternatively, get active with paddleboards and kayaks or go beneath the waves on a marine safari. A whole world of experiences awaits both above and below the water's glimmering surface.

Sightings may include spinner and bottlenose dolphins, migrating humpback whales and many other cetaceans as well as yellowfin tuna and manta rays. On dry land, the restaurant offers a melting pot of international flavours and fusion Creole cuisine, just what you need after all that swimming.

 Private beach at North Island
Private beach at North Island

North Island

BEST FOR: Ultra luxury

Remote. Exclusive. And utterly beautiful. Welcome to North Island – the private Seychelles retreat that played host to Prince William and Kate’s royal honeymoon in 2011. Often cited as one of the world’s most luxurious island escapes, this ultra-exclusive sanctuary features just 11 hand-crafted villas nestled between ivory sand beaches, dramatic granite outcrops and the crystalline Indian Ocean. It’s not unusual to go an entire stay without seeing another guest. Bliss? Absolutely.

Each villa is uniquely designed using local materials, blending barefoot elegance with environmental sensitivity. Dining is entirely bespoke, tailored daily to your preferences. That said, we highly recommend Laid Back by Akira Back, where candlelit dinners on the sand are paired with inventive Japanese-Korean fusion and the soft soundtrack of waves. Continue your sensory journey at the spa, where treatments incorporate local ingredients and holistic techniques are designed to restore balance. Whether it’s beach yoga at sunrise, a guided island ecology walk, or exploring the reef by kayak, North Island invites you to reconnect mind, body, and soul.

Whether you’re deciding between Mauritius or Maldives for your next island escape, or comparing the Seychelles vs the Maldives for your honeymoon, there’s no denying the Indian Ocean sets the standard for secluded luxury and overwater opulence. But if you’re after a destination that blends five-star resorts with cultural depth, lush landscapes and family-friendly charm, Mauritius could be your perfect match.
