With so many incredible places to see, choosing just one can feel rather limiting. That’s where luxury twin-centre holidays come in. City and sand. Adventure and relaxation. Rooftop cocktails one week followed by an Indian Ocean island the next. It’s a chance for city lovers to squeeze in some beach time, sun-seekers to add a little adventure and the indecisive among us to have the best of both worlds.
And while two destinations might sound like twice the travelling, clever pairing makes all the difference. The best multi-centre holidays combine places that complement one another and are easy to travel between, giving you two completely different experiences without sacrificing precious holiday time. Think wildlife-filled days followed by Maldivian waters; skyscrapers and street food before rainforest and beach; or fast-paced sightseeing rewarded with several days doing very little at all.
So, what will your double be? From the Indian Ocean to the Caribbean, these are some of our favourite luxury twin-centre holidays.
Sri Lanka and the Maldives: safari, scenery and serious relaxation
Travel time: approximately 1 hour, 30 minutes by plane
Few luxury twin-centre holidays change the pace quite as brilliantly as Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Sri Lanka packs an extraordinary amount into one island, from ancient sites and tea country to wildlife, beautiful beaches and a food scene worth travelling for alone. Climb the ancient Sigiriya Rock Fortress, visit the Temple of the Tooth, take a scenic train journey through the hill country or head out on safari in Yala National Park, where elephants, leopards and buffalo are among the wildlife to look out for.
After all that adventure, your second destination provides the perfect change of pace. Fly across the Indian Ocean to the Maldives, where turquoise lagoons, powder-soft sand and overwater villas turn those postcard pictures into real life. Days here can be as relaxed or active as you like, with exceptional dining, indulgent spa experiences and watersports all on offer – although doing absolutely nothing is a perfectly respectable option too. Consider this your cue to switch your phone to 'Do Not Disturb', and mean it.
Where to stay
Get up close and personal with Sri Lanka’s wildlife at Wild Coast Tented Lodge, set on the edge of Yala National Park where jungle meets the beach. Cocoon-shaped suites put you at one with nature without sacrificing your creature comforts, with four-poster beds and handmade copper bathtubs, while expert-led game drives take you in search of elephants, leopards and more. For an extra dose of luxury, opt for a Pool Cocoon with its own private plunge pool.
Then go all-out in the Maldives at Jumeirah Olhahali Island. Set in the North Malé Atoll, its 67 spacious beach and overwater villas each come with a private infinity pool and rooftop terrace, with brilliant blue ocean in practically every direction. Spend your days snorkelling and diving, unwinding at Talise Spa or simply stepping from your villa into the water, before settling in for dinner overlooking the Indian Ocean. It’s a suitably indulgent change of pace after the adventures of Sri Lanka.

Singapore and Langkawi: skyscrapers to sea views
Travel time: approximately 1 hour, 30 minutes by plane
Singapore is proof that a stopover deserves far more than a night near the airport. This vibrant city-state blends tradition with modernity, pairing futuristic architecture, designer shopping and Michelin-starred restaurants with colourful neighbourhoods, temples and legendary hawker centres. Wander beneath the Supertrees at Gardens by the Bay, browse Orchard Road and eat as much as is socially acceptable – a food tour is an excellent excuse – before watching the city light up after dark.
Then trade skyscrapers for sea views with a short flight to Malaysia and the island of Langkawi. Here, ancient rainforest meets the Andaman Sea, and days can be spent between beaches, mangroves and waterfalls, including the pools of Seven Wells Waterfall. For a different perspective, ride the cable car towards Langkawi Sky Bridge, suspended high above the forest. Back at sea level, however, we’d suggest doing very little beyond finding somewhere comfortable for sunset. Cocktail or three optional. Well, sort of.
Where to stay
Put Singapore at your feet at Marina Bay Sands, an icon of the city skyline and home to its famous 57th-floor rooftop infinity pool. Beyond those spectacular views, there’s an impressive clutch of restaurants, entertainment and a simply stellar collection of and suites, making this much more than simply a base for exploring Singapore on a short layover. It makes the city-state as alluring a destination as anywhere else in the world.
Then transition to beachfront living at The St. Regis Langkawi, where centuries-old rainforest meets the Andaman Sea. Beautifully-appointed suites and overwater villas set the scene, while Kayuputi serves pan-Asian cuisine from its striking overwater setting. Our favourite spot? The Pavilion, where netted hammocks suspended above the water provide a rather lovely place to admire the mountain views – champagne in hand, of course. From 57 storeys up to right beside the sea, it’s the one time moving down in the world feels, well, pretty good.
New York and Toronto: a tale of two skylines
Travel time: approximately 1 hour, 30 minutes by plane
Why have one city break when you can collect two? Start in New York, a city that doesn’t believe in easing you in gently. Walk through Central Park, catch a Broadway show, browse Fifth Avenue and form unnecessarily strong opinions about where to find the best New York pizza. For one of the best views of Manhattan, head to Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center, where The Beam experience recreates the famous 1932 Lunch Atop a Skyscraper photograph – only this time you’ll be safely strapped in as you’re lifted above the observation deck. A packed itinerary is practically compulsory.
A short flight takes you to Toronto, where Canada’s largest city provides a different flavour of big-city break. Explore its diverse neighbourhoods, waterfront, restaurants and galleries, and take in the skyline from the CN Tower. Leave time for a day trip to Niagara Falls, where three waterfalls span the Canada-US border and can be experienced from viewpoints, boat trips and even the air. Back in Toronto, there’s important culinary research to conduct: try poutine, a peameal bacon sandwich and a butter tart for good measure. Two cities, two iconic skylines and absolutely no need to pick a favourite.
Where to stay
There are New York hotels, and then there’s The Plaza. Overlooking Central Park from its landmark Fifth Avenue address, this Manhattan icon pairs old-school glamour with a location made for exploring, with Fifth Avenue shopping, Central Park and many of Midtown’s sights close by. Film fans may recognise its grand interiors from the likes of North by Northwest, The Great Gatsby and, perhaps most famously, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. The hotel still embraces its starring role with a Home Alone 2-inspired experience – proof that sometimes leaning into your tourist era is absolutely the right thing to do.

Across the border, Shangri-La Toronto brings contemporary luxury to the heart of downtown Toronto. Its University Avenue location puts restaurants, theatres, galleries and major city sights within easy reach, while spacious rooms and suites offer impressive skyline views. When your feet have had enough sightseeing, retreat to the hotel’s wellness facilities for a swim or treatment before heading back out to explore. Old-school New York glamour followed by sleek Toronto style – two city stays with very different personalities.
Miami and The Bahamas: turn up the colour
Travel time: approximately 1 hour by plane
Miami doesn’t really do subtle, which is precisely the point. Art Deco architecture, Cuban influences, glamorous restaurants, serious shopping and long stretches of sand give this Florida favourite an infectious energy. Give South Beach a proper outing, admire the pastel-hued buildings of the Art Deco Historic District and head to Little Havana for Cuban food and culture. There’s Wynwood for colourful murals and galleries, while Ocean Drive serves up beachside glamour by day and bars, restaurants and nightlife after dark. And for a completely different side to Florida, venture beyond the city on an airboat tour of the Everglades, keeping watch for alligators, turtles and other wildlife along the way.
When you’re ready to turn down the volume, it’s just a short flight to The Bahamas, an archipelago of more than 700 islands and cays surrounded by startlingly blue water. Spend your days snorkelling over coral reefs, cruising between islands, sinking your toes into white-sand beaches or doing precisely nothing beside the sea, though of course there's always some spirited Caribbean nightlife soundtracked by the patter of steel drums somewhere...
Families can make a splash at Aquaventure at Atlantis Paradise Island, while those with swimming pigs on their bucket list can head for Pig Beach in the Exumas – a dedicated excursion rather than something to expect beside your Nassau sunlounger. Miami brings the party. The Bahamas provides the recovery plan.

Dining is every bit as enticing, with everything from refined coastal cuisine at Café Boulud to relaxed Mediterranean flavours at Costa, alongside a tempting collection of bars and restaurants across the wider resort. Dubai and Abu Dhabi: city lights to desert nights

Dubai and Abu Dhabi may be neighbours, but this luxury UAE twin-centre holiday delivers two distinctly different experiences. Begin at full volume in Dubai, where futuristic architecture rises against a desert backdrop and beach clubs, designer boutiques, world-class restaurants and spectacular hotels compete for attention. Spend your days exploring Downtown Dubai and Palm Jumeirah, retreat to the beach or head beyond the skyline on a desert safari, where dune drives and camel rides can be followed by dinner as the sun disappears over the sand. You could easily fill every minute – although in a city with resorts this impressive, abandoning the itinerary in favour of the pool is entirely defensible.
Then make the roughly 90-minute journey to Abu Dhabi, where contemporary luxury sits alongside a rich Emirati cultural heritage. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is an essential stop, while Qasr Al Hosn offers a fascinating window into the story of the UAE capital. For something altogether faster, Yas Island is home to Ferrari World Abu Dhabi which famously has Formula Rossa, the world’s fastest roller coaster, as it's top attraction. And the contrast doesn’t have to end there: venture into the Empty Quarter and Abu Dhabi’s cityscape gives way to vast desert dunes.
From Dubai’s bright lights to Abu Dhabi’s culture and desert landscapes, this is one double act that refuses to do things by halves.

Make a suitably spectacular entrance at Atlantis The Royal, the statement-making luxury resort on the crescent of The Palm. European twin centres
You don’t need to cross oceans to make a twin-centre holiday work. For those looking for something a little closer to home, some of Europe’s best luxury multi-centre holidays still offer a tale of two very different halves – with destinations easily combined by car, train or a short onward journey.
Granted, a few might take you just beyond the 90-minute mark, but with a shorter flight to get there in the first place, they’re still easy wins for a dual-destination escape. Think city and coast, culture and countryside, all with considerably less time in transit and more time actually on holiday.
Milan and Lake Como: style meets serenity
Travel time: approximately 2 hours by car

Walk the famous city walls, explore the UNESCO-listed Old City and make time for the waterfront before continuing south into Montenegro. Here, dramatic mountains tumble towards Boka Bay, with historic towns, secluded beaches and spectacular coastal scenery giving the second half of your Adriatic twin-centre holiday an entirely different feel.
