When is the best time to holiday in Mauritius?

  • Published 14 June 2021

The main island of Mauritius is located between the equator and the tropic of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere, around 2000km off the east coast of Africa. Its global position guarantees a subtropical climate all year-round. Like many tropical countries there are two distinctive seasons, a wet season and a dry season. The wet season occurs with the hot temperatures and high humidity of the summer months from November to April and the cooler winter months of May to October provide drier days.

Throughout the summer temperatures rise and so does the humidity, although regular short bursts of rainfall keep the levels comfortable. January and February tend to be the hottest months of the year with average temperatures hovering around 28°C. These early months also coincide with cyclone season, which means if you travel at this time of year, you should be prepared to experience more rainfall. If humidity doesn’t agree with you, instead opt to travel from May onwards, where temperatures are cooler but still maintain a lovely warmth throughout with far less precipitation.

Mauritius’ main island experiences a microclimate, where various coasts can witness different conditions at the same time. Because of the topography of the island the most precipitation falls in the mountainous regions, hence the incredible lush and tropical greenery that grows here. From January to March when cyclones can be expected, the southeast coast is where you will see the heaviest rainfall and the north and west coast is typically drier throughout the year. The south and east coast also witnesses stronger trade winds during July and August which make it cooler in these winter months, although that does make them a superb option for water sports such as sailing and surfing. In a similar vein, if you are interested in diving and snorkelling in the winter the sheltered northwest coast can provide calmer seas and therefore better visibility.

The peak season for visitors to Mauritius is between October and April and low season runs from May to September. October is possibly the best month to visit the island for a good balance of heat and dry weather, however you can certainly holiday here all year round. Whenever you choose to visit this spectacular destination, you can expect predictable sunny skies and warm weather throughout the year with clouds quickly being dispersed by short bursts of tropical rainfall.
