Where the trendsetters flock, the artistic muse and the fashionable descend, Miami is one of America’s most cosmopolitan cities. With inspirations from its Caribbean neighbours such as Haiti and Trinidad alongside its strong Cuban community, the city is a melting pot of culture, fashion and flamboyance.

Although most major cities claim to offer something for all, Miami is one of the few that truly delivers. Don’t believe us? Simply pitch up at one of the lively bars on Ocean Drive or sit outside a quaint café in Little Havana and watch the world – and people – go by. Because in Miami, people watching isn’t a delightful pastime… it’s a sport. We challenge you to see a more diverse crowd in one hour. Couples, families, foodies, hipsters, hippies, artists. It’s like bingo but for the crowds of society.

A backdrop of meringue-pink and lemon-sherbet Art Deco buildings dating back to the early ‘20s and ‘30s set against the twinkling azure ocean creates a colourful outlook throughout the city – one which somehow marries the American dream with coffee drinking and salsa dancing. 

There’s no hiding it: Miami is lively. But only if you choose for it to be. By day, don your most fabulous swimwear and check-out Nikki Beach or Delano Beach Club, and when night falls there are plenty of stylish restaurants, neon-front bars and thumping super-clubs to entertain. 

Lining Ocean Drive, the variety for food and drinks is as varied as the coloured supercars which slowly pass by, but our favourite hangout is easily Gianni’s at The Villa Casa Casuarina. With a menu that offers a delicious blend of Italian flavours, the food beautifully complements the stunning aesthetic of Versace’s former residence. 

If retail is your therapy of choice, Miami has malls and boutiques by the bucket load. And for those all-important bargains, drive 45-minutes from South Beach to Sawgrass Mills for premium outlets spread across 2.3 million square feet.

Art is fast-becoming one of Miami’s famous exports with museums, galleries and installations popping up more frequent than dollars into the Kardashians’ bank account. And while we could list our top pick of must-visits, if you’re only planning on passing through one make sure it’s Wynwood Walls. These colourful graffiti street murals have been designed by artists from around the globe and are the ideal spot to test out your new Nikon.

If nature is more your speed, Everglades National Park has a tour to suit all, plus it’s within close proximity to Florida Keys – the ideal spot for snorkelling and scuba diving. We can’t think of a box that Miami doesn’t tick. And yes, there are daily direct flights from London.
