Portofino In A Nutshell

Portofino is a destination that can be explored from many perspectives and in many ways. Being a seaside town, taking to the water is naturally one of the best ways of discovering its unique personality and landscapes. Boat trips run regularly and you can also try stand-up paddle boarding if you want to get even closer to the water!

Also go on a guided group kayaking tour to see the full beauty of Portofino as you enjoy the thrill of being on the waves. Visit creeks and caves on route while marvelling at what can be spotted inside the marine reserve. There’s also a scenic lunch stop where you can refuel with some locally-grown food and wine. Snorkelling is also an option, as are sunset kayaking tours.

One of the spots you’ll likely glide past is Paraggi Beach. Set within a sheltered bay, Paraggi Beach is backed by tree-covered cliffs and its shimmering waters are ideal for activities such as snorkelling and diving. They’re also part of the Portofino Marine Park, so every underwater escapade will have you coming face to face with rich biodiversity.

Just a short walk from the town’s harbour is Chiesa di San Giorgio. Be sure to take plenty of pictures of the idyllic landscape as you make the climb to this clifftop church that was built in the Romanesque style in 1154. Then head inside to have your breath taken away by its immaculate white interior. Venturing further into the surrounding hills will have you coming across grand mansions and villas, as well as rambling olive groves and vineyards. There are miles of hiking trails to follow, so hours of exploration are guaranteed.

For the best views in all of Portofino, a visit to Castello Brown is an absolute must. The climb there is certainly not for the faint hearted, but the vistas that greet you at the top are more than worth it. While you’re there, learn all about the history of the castle in the museum and take strolls around the pretty gardens - if you can tear your eyes away from the spectacular views.

When it’s time for a meal after all that sightseeing and outdoor adventures, you’ll find plenty of restaurant choices in Portofino. Ristorante Puny offers guests an authentic Italian experience of the highest standard. Occupying a prime spot in Portofino Square, expect to be spoiled for choice with an abundance of mouth-watering options. Be sure to book in advance to avoid disappointment as the eatery is popular among visitors and locals alike.

An elegant destination for shopping and dining, a place to soak up history, and a natural playground. Portofino is all these things and more! So, whether you visit for a family holiday, a couples’ getaway, or a solo adventure, you’ll be delighted with what this resort town has to offer.

frequently asked questions

September and October are two of the best months to travel to Portofino, as the weather is still pleasantly warm (23°C) and crowds are smaller than they are in summer. Spring (April to June) can also be a lovely time to visit, for similar reasons. But if you like high temperatures and practically wall-to-wall sunshine, you’ll be in heaven if you travel to Portofino in July and August as the temperature regularly hits 29°C.
Seafood is an obvious choice, with restaurants serving a variety of dishes made with fresh fish caught right off the coast. Alternatively, tuck into a bowl of Ligurian minestrone or homemade pasta served with Genovese pesto, with focaccia on the side for a truly authentic meal.
