Zakynthos

Get your Mamma Mia on with a luxury Greek getaway you’ll never forget in Zakynthos. Often referred to as Zante (or even Zacinto), this destination is one-of-a-kind as it offers a little bit of everything from island party scenes and towns packed with historical highlights to world-class foodie joints and brilliant beaches you could lounge on forever.

With a mild climate all-year-around, sun and sea worshippers are really going to love this island retreat as there are a number of golden shores to choose from. Whether you prefer rocky, pebble or sandy stretches, there’s bound to be a beach for you, with almost all offering fabulous amenities like beach clubs, waterfront eateries and loungers. One of Greece’s most photographed bays, Navagio is found on Zakynthos, so if you don’t make it to any of the others, make sure you go there!

Need to make up for all that seaside lounging with an all-night party? The island’s south coast is a must, particularly Laganas which is the island’s answer to Ibiza. These little pockets are packed with excellent after dark destination from pubs to clubs, where you can dance the evening away and enjoy a fun night out with friends.

If scenes of party mayhem aren’t your thing, then we recommend sticking to the North and West sides of the island, which are unspoilt and scenic. Home to the world-famous endangered loggerhead turtles on Gerakas Beach, these remoter Zakynthos regions are a blissful escape where all you have to put up with is the soft swish of waves on the sand and the breeze in the palms. Particularly recommended are Keri and Limni Keriou in the southwest and Agios Nikolaos and Cape Skinari in the north.

WINGED BOOTS WISDOM

Rent a car as its easier to access the most peaceful and secluded beaches, and public transport on the island is patchy a best

Zakynthos In A Nutshell

Life’s a Beach

  • Of course, if you thought of leaving Zakynthos without making at least one trip to Navagio (aka Shipwreck Bay), no one would believe you’d even gone. One of Europe’s most photographed beaches, the secluded inlet is absolutely stunning with high cliff faces, aquamarine waters and, of course, the famous beached vessel. Due to its popularity, we recommend getting there early to reserve your space.

  • A beach that’s excellent for those old enough to indulge in a seaside drink, Porto-Zorro is a fabulous stretch with plenty of tavernas, beach bars and leisure activities for everyone to enjoy.

  • A perfect choice for families due to its watersport offerings and clean shores, Tsilivi Beach is just a quick drive from Zakynthos town and offers all the amenities you could hope for from seafood shacks to music venues and surfing schools.

Tastes to Try

  • A typical Zakynthiot meal will have several important elements, so you’d better make room before your trip to indulge in everything on offer. Starting with a variety of dips such as tzatziki, hummus, olive oil and taramasalata served with focaccia style bread, you’ll be introduced to a variety of textures and flavours. Your main will be the meat portion of your meal with dishes such as moussaka, kleftiko or papoutsakia on offer, shortly followed by honeyed pastries for dessert and thick black coffees to round off.

  • Want to drink like a local? For nights out or night in, Ouzo is the drink of choice on this Greek island. A potent tipple you should be careful with, it has a distinct liquorice flavour and is distilled from remnants of grapes pressed for wine.

  • But where can you go to try out all these Greek goodies? A particularly recommended eatery is Essence in Kalamaki. Providing a fine dining experience that celebrates everything local, the collection of Zakynthiot wines and producers are unrivalled and absolutely divine.

Adventure Awaits

  • Without a doubt, The Blue Caves of Zakynthos are a must, whether you’re a first-time visitor or a returning guest of the island. The area is one of Mother Nature’s stunning miracles with its impressive geological arch formations and labyrinthine passageways inside the cliffs. What makes this place really special though is the water. Gleaming such an iridescent blue that it seems to give off its own eerie light, the waves in the caves reflect the sapphire hue onto everything, including you!

  • For an adrenaline-fuelled thrill ride that also has a softer side, we recommend hiring a speedboat or taking a boat tour out onto Zakynthos’ stunning ocean waves. Once you’ve had your fill of rocketing around, you could explore the island’s less accessible spots and search for the elusive loggerhead turtles.

  • If you want to get that perfect Navagio shot or even just discover the more remote regions of this Greek destination, why not hire a quadbike? Available for those over 19 with either a full car or AM license, this ideal venture means you’ll be able to enjoy the views, have fun and go off-roading all at once!
