Ah, the great outdoors, full of adrenaline activities, exciting encounters and sporty pursuits, how could it get any better than this? Well, in the USA’s Colorado, all this and more is at your disposal in a thrillingly beautiful landscape of snowy mountain ranges, wide open plains and rushing rivers. But it’s not all impressive peaks and canyon-filled deserts, the state also has a thriving urban scene that will keep city-dwellers at ease. And best of all, a holiday here is just a phone call away!

If you enjoy a good frolic in the snow, you’re going to love this region as it really packs a punch with its selection of slopes. For unrivalled opulence and an array of activities, head to Aspen, for unparalleled powder and wooded runs, Crested Butte is an equally attractive option or to ski through your days and dance away the night, the lively buzz of Winter Park could be your cup of tea. You’ll find plenty to do in these fun-filled mountain towns other than the traditional snow sports with everything from dog sledding to glacier skiing on offer.

Love outdoor pursuits but would prefer a little more sun and a little less snow? The peaks of Colorado are just as perfect for summer getaways. Encompassing the larger part of the famous Rocky Mountains, the region is renowned for its excellent hiking, biking and climbing opportunities which are best enjoyed in the warmer months when you can bring along a picnic for a halfway snack.

If you thought that all Colorado offered was stunning natural scenery, you’d be quite wrong. Denver, Boulder and Aspen offer urban adventures just as exciting as any city break in Europe. Denver, the state capital, is a thriving scene of fashion, art and culinary innovation where you’ll find everything from designer brands to cultural landmarks. The LoDo district (lower downtown) is a particularly fashionable postcode for all your retail needs.

Arrived and feeling a bit light-headed? That’s not surprising as Colorado is the highest-altitude state in the USA. At an impressive 2,073 metres above sea level, those unused to these heady heights should be on guard against altitude sickness. To prevent this, you should drink plenty of water, alternate between areas of higher and lower altitude (such as Aspen and Denver) and curb alcohol consumption to speed up the acclimatisation process.

  • Considered to be one of the state’s signature dishes, you have to try the rather unique delicacy of Rocky Mountain Oysters during your stay. Not all they seem on the packet, the savoury dish is said to taste a lot like chicken and is often served breaded and fried with a side of fries and a spicy sauce to top it all.
