Is that the faint sound of yodelling we hear? Forget the stereotypes of lederhosen, mountain goats and cuckoo clocks, the Switzerland of the 21st century is very à la mode – perfect for a luxury holiday! Something for the linguists, in this incredible country there are four dialects at work (French, German, Italian and Romansh), creating a cosmopolitan atmosphere that’s totally unique. If this hasn’t got your sense of adventure and curiosity whetted then don’t worry, there’s plenty more to tempt you.
City slickers should consider Switzerland as its metropolitan side is bigger and more booming than ever. Its capital Bern, as well as the über stylish Zürich, are major players on the European city scene. Both feature impressive feats of contemporary architecture, after dark destinations to die for and the very best in culinary spots among other fabulous attributes.
Those who like to get ahead of the game in art, food, fashion and even science are sure to love coming here as the zeitgeist of the country is superbly avant-garde. Exceptional innovations like the large hadron collider in C.E.R.N, the edgy galleries of Geneva and the gourmet dining destinations of Lausanne all show Switzerland as a futuristic European destination.
But let’s be honest, the adventurous nature-lovers and sport enthusiasts among you will be coming for the Eden-esq Switzerland of Heidi and Night Train to Lisbon, and there’s plenty of that to go around! Whether you want to sit among the Swiss meadows of wildflowers in summer, indulging in lakeside watersports or donn your furs and whizz through the powder-like snow of the mountain resorts, Switzerland has ample provisions. In particular, Zermatt, St Moritz and Verbier are considered to be some of the continent’s top spots for winter sports and eye-wateringly beautiful alpine scenery.

Switzerland in a Nutshell

Adventure Awaits
  • We just can’t list adventure activities without mentioning the obvious thrill-ride of Swiss snow sports. Offering every kind of winter activity you could think of from snowboarding and sleigh rides to heli-skiing and figure skating, this is a powder-loving paradise.
  • See the countryside like never before with some of the most beautiful and adrenaline-filled alpine slides in the world. Known as tin-tobogganing, this roller-coaster- type ride will have you soaring over the mountainsides in scenic valleys such as Fräkmüntegg, Grindelwald and Pilatus at altitudes of 1415 metres.
  • License to kill? More like license to thrill! Let your inner James Bond out with a death-defying bungee jump of 220 metres at Contra Dam in Ticino, as seen in Goldeneye. Remember to book in advance though, this is one popular spot!
Tastes to Try
  • We only have a few tasty words when it comes to Swiss cuisine: cheese, and lots of it. The country consumes around 22 kg of cheese a year… per person! From the hard cheese Le Gruyère to the melty bliss of Raclette, it's no surprise that Switzerland is known as the second cheese capital of the world, after France.
  • Although much of the swiss diet is dairy or bread related, it’s also well known for its speciality cured meats. Bündnerfleisch is a firm favourite, dried in the Alpine air for between 10 to 15 weeks.
  • An undisputed Swiss champion in seafood and fine dining, Brasserie Lipp Genève in Geneva is a Michelin-starred eatery that will blow your socks off and give you a real taste of what Swiss chefs can do.
Soak Up the Culture
  • One of the most iconic heritage landmarks of Switzerland is Chillon Castle. A picturesque structure teetering on the edge of Lac Léman aka Lake Geneva this charmingly medieval fortress is not only good for your Instagram feed but also offers tours, shows and kids activities.
  • Get a taste of Swiss carnival action by attending Basler Fasnacht. Found in Basel the Monday following Ash Wednesday, this historic festival lasts for three-days with masked performers marching through the streets from four o’clock in the morning with beer flowing left, right and centre.
  • Art lovers shouldn’t miss out on Switzerland’s phenomenal creative scene. Every town is packed with impressive galleries showcasing not only Swiss artists but international works as well. A definite on any bucket list is Kunstmuseum Bern. Found in the capital city, this museum of classical paintings is home to some familiar names, including Botticelli, Manet, Picasso, van Gogh and Wassmer.
