Weekend walking tour of Washington

Stately, striking and seriously iconic, Washington plays host to many of America’s most important landmarks making it ideal for families, couples and those wanting to soak up the rich culture and history found in this Presidential playground.

With this in mind, we’ve compiled our very own ‘Washington in a weekend walking tour’ (taxis, trains and other means of transportation are also acceptable) so you can tick off all the top sights with ease.

First stop on our walking tour hit list is the big one, The White House. Unfortunately, the closest you’ll get to the President and First Lady will be outside the White House’s iron gates as internationals are not granted access inside. However, a ten-minute walk from the famous building takes you to the White House Visitors Centre which is full of memorabilia and a wealth of exhibits which welcomes all types of travellers… regardless of your passport.

A seven-minute drive away continues the history lesson, this time with added foliage thanks to the National Mall. Nicknamed ‘America’s Front Yard,’ expect vast museums and towering memorials alongside a wealth of flora and fauna. Here, you have to stop by the famed Lincoln Memorial, a leisurely 30-minute stroll from the centre of the park. Inspired by Greek design, the seated statue of Abraham Lincoln brings millions flocking every year and has featured in multiple blockbuster hits including Forrest Gump, Night At The Museum 2, X-Men: First Class and Transformers: Dark Of The Moon.

Six minutes from here will take you to The Pentagon. Located across the river, just over the border in Virginia, we highly recommend taking the fantastic 60-minute tour which highlights the significant moments in military history before heading to the 9/11 crash site and memorial, the Hall of Heroes. Three sections of the Berlin Wall are also on show for an authentic taste of modern history. Make sure to reserve in advance by contacting The British Embassy for more information.

And finally, make sure to visit Capitol Hill, a fantastic area boasting the Capitol building, amazing shopping at Eastern Market and bars and restaurants that are sure to tantalise the taste buds. Pie Bar is probably one of the quirkiest serving a plethora of variations of the well-loved pastry with indulgent delights such as apple crumble and chocolate pecan to devour. Signature cocktails such as miles pie club and a range of pie-tinis ensures the night goes off with a bang and makes for the ideal way to round off the weekend tour.

WINGED BOOTS WISDOM

For a five-star stay in Washington, why not check-in to the Trump International Hotel or the Four Seasons? Both boasting the same postcode as The White House, it’s the perfect base to soak up all that Washington has to offer.
