Discover Alcatraz Island

“If you disobey the rules of society, you’re sent to prison. If you disobey the rules of prison, you’re sent to Alcatraz.”

Want to visit the secluded state penitentiary where some of the most notorious criminals in American history carried out their sentence? Jump on board a ferry from Pier 33 to have full access to the isolated former-prison and explore the infamous rock.

The inspiration behind, and setting for, multiple blockbuster films including Escape from Alcatraz starring Clint Eastwood, The Rock was home to many of America’s most remembered villains. The most famous inmates include gangsters Al Capone, George ‘Machine Gun’ Kelly and Robert ‘Birdman’ Stroud, just three of the 1,545 prisoners, plus staff and their families, who called the island home.

On your visit, pop into Scarface’s cell, wander through the recreation yard and take a seat in the mess hall to get a feel for prison life during its 29 years of operation. Venture through B and C block and see where three inmates escaped through widened air ducts – the only ‘successful’ escape attempt from Alcatraz to be recorded – before visiting dreaded D block and its 36 segregation cells and six confinement chambers. You wouldn’t want to hear those bars slam shut followed by the turn of a key!

WINGED BOOTS WISDOM

For the best insight into its history, take the audio tour which includes real-life stories from inmates and tales from the wardens. Suitable for history buffs and gangster-nerds alike, a visit to Alcatraz is the ultimate half-day trip for those looking for something to write home about.
