We’re going to make a bold statement: London’s West End is superior to Broadway. Yes, we know some critics would disagree, but we’ve got a compelling argument that we’re not going to budge on. Firstly, let’s look at the actual theatres. The buildings are brimming with character and each playhouse has a story to tell. Theatre Royal, Drury Lane – one of the city’s oldest – has survived three fires and has recently undergone a £60million refurbishment project to return it to its 1812 glory. (Reopening in October 2020 with the musical adaptation of Disney’s Frozen.) The Lyceum was the first theatre to offer a balcony overhanging the circle. Oh, and let’s not forget the beautiful Royal Opera House and Shakespeare’s Globe… off-Broadway certainly isn’t as pretty as these monuments.

Next up, it’s the interiors. West End theatres certainly aren’t shy. A plush red velvet curtain, swooping drapes, and enough royal boxes to make you feel like a real-life prince or princess. Team this with layer upon layer of gold gild, fabulous chandeliers and hand-painted sky ceilings that could rival Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, it’s hard to draw your eyes to the stage and not the grand surrounds.

And finally, the abundance of luxury hotels within walking distance to London’s theatreland. Boasting just as much history, equal measures of classic interiors and ornate exteriors, plus with an unrivalled British service level, nowhere else in the world can compare. To prove our point even further, we’ve rounded up the best West End Shows currently running and teamed them with a deluxe London hotel within walking distance to help you plan the perfect show and stay weekend.

Mamma Mia

With 20-years under its belt, the hit musical sees Sophie invite her possible three dads to her wedding. It’s impossible to leave this musical without a spring in your step and we challenge you to attempt to watch the show without tapping your foot and singing along… we bet you don’t even get to the interval. Now showing at the Novello Theatre in Aldwych, Mamma Mia is in central location close to Holborn, Covent Garden and within a 10-minute walk of Leicester Square.

The Lion King

This celebrated musical has been running in our capital for more than 20-years and shows no signs of leaving anytime soon. The Disney classic has been brought to life with colourful set designs, clever costumes and the same Elton John and Tim Rice soundtrack that sounds as if it were written to be performed live on stage. If you can, try to book an aisle seat in the stalls, or anywhere in Row R, as you’ll be within touching distance to some of the cast which truly brings ‘The Circle Of Life’ scene to err… life. Although the film is fabulous for children, we would advise that it may not be suitable for those under eight-years-old.

The Book Of Mormon

Politically incorrect, almost offensive (but not quite) and laugh-out-loud entertainment; The Book Of Mormon is unlike any other West End Show. For you musical veterans, think the hilarity of Avenue Q, meets the campness of Priscilla Queen Of The Desert while those not quite as clued up, it’s South Park mixed with Glee. The songs are catchy with its opening number ‘Hello!’ our all-time favourite, closely followed by ‘Turn It Off’. The story follows young Mormons going on their first missionary to recruit more to their faith, with an unlikely pair – the top boy and the bottom of the class – partnered together with extremely amusing results. We won’t tell you anymore as the surprise and ‘shock-factor’ is what makes this musical. Our advice is not to read any reviews, but just to book your seats and enjoy the production.

Wicked

The story you never knew you needed to know… how Elphaba, the wicked witch of the west who tormented Dorothy in The Wizard Of Oz, came to be ‘wicked’. It’s an unlikely story of friendship which turns the typical green-faced villain into a loved heroine. The original soundtrack is now commonplace, even with those never seeing the show knowing the main hit ‘Defying Gravity’, putting this musical in the hall of fame alongside other favourites such as Les Miserables and The Phantom Of The Opera. A great show that’s good for children as well as adults, if you haven’t already seen it, we recommend booking pronto!

Where to stay: The Goring
Quintessentially English, The Goring is a traditional hotel that utilises a pastel colour palette, dark woods and textured fabric to bring the British countryside to the capital. No pre-show experience would be complete without a glass of champagne or a unique blend of liqueurs, spirits and herbs at The Goring Cocktail Bar. Continuing the customary British stay, The Goring’s afternoon tea experience is creative and delicious, another must pre-theatre. After the show, debrief in one of the rooms or suites, where comfort is paramount.

It’s good to note that this hotel is also within walking distance to Hamilton, the historical tale of how one of the founding fathers came to be. The most successful of its kind, this hip-hop musical’s entire dialogue is in song or rap, and the tempo is something to marvel at.

To organise a show and stay weekend, call one of our personal travel managers who can organise seats, room nights and even dinner reservations. Call our expert team on 0203 816 0985 or click here to submit an online enquiry.
