The best places to get engaged in Bali

Travel 101 | 17 February 2023

Thinking of planning the perfect Bali engagement? If so, we’ve got a few ideas that’ll hopefully bring some inspiration. It’s all about planning something you know your special someone will love, whether it’s popping the question in a picture-perfect rainforest setting or in private when you’re enjoying a quiet moment together away from crowds – like in one of the many deluxe suites at Bali’s five-star resorts.

Rest assured, a romantic getaway to Bali is full of little moments and opportunities to get down on one knee spontaneously, but if it’s a pre-planned proposal you’re after – we’ve got your backs. After all, this is one of the biggest moments in your life, so it’s nice to have a helping hand to make sure it all goes to plan.

So, what are the best ways to propose in Bali? And how can you make your Bali engagement an extraordinary moment you’ll never forget? Listen up.

First on our list of the best ways to propose in Bali is at Kubu, the open-air signature restaurant at Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve. The romance meter is turned up to the max here, especially if you request a special table in one of the intimate cocoon booths.

Everything about this place exudes love and sensuality. You’ll be snuggled into the booth with a candle flickering and the Ayung River flowing right beside you. The food is stellar here too, so get yourselves dressed up in your best holiday attire and tuck the ring in your pocket ready for the perfect moment.

The restaurant’s vibes are quiet and peaceful, so don’t worry about doing it in front of other people who are sitting right beside you. Everything’s pretty spaced out.

This is a top choice for a couple of hikers heading to Bali to explore its spectacular natural beauty.

Bali’s Island landscape is packed with all sorts of picture-perfect backdrops for a romantic proposal, whether it’s on the white sands of a remote beach, atop a mountain overlooking nearby villages, or in front of the Blangsinga Waterfall, one of Bali’s most popular picturesque spots for enjoying an off-the-beaten-track peaceful atmosphere.

Just beware the spot can get pretty busy at times, so if you want some privacy, consider going super early in the morning when an audience of tourists is less likely. And one of the best nearby places to stay is Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan, so book a suite here if Blangsinga Waterfall is an absolute must-do for your Bali trip. It's also one of our favourite honeymoon hotels in Bali.

A romantic dinner for two at the resort’s Ayung Terrace restaurant is the ideal place to come back and celebrate with a bottle of champagne once they’ve said yes and the ring’s officially on their finger.

One of the best resorts for feeling immersed in Bali’s rich culture and heritage is Soori Bali.

Its long list of excursions spans visits to the 16th-century Hindu shrine Tanah Lot or a stroll through the beautiful gardens of local village Gunung Salak – but we think the most romantic trip perfect for a proposal is one of the complimentary daily walks to the nearby rice paddies at Taman Buwana Farm.

Venture off for a private moment just you two and bend down on one knee with the breathtaking rolling hills as your backdrop. It’s these special moments when you’re a million miles from home that feel most extraordinary. Sometimes it’s best to think outside the box and do it when they’re least expecting it.

Want your Bali engagement to be out-of-this-world spectacular? How about a helicopter ride? Book a stay at Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay and you’ll have the chance to charter a helicopter over to Grajagan, also known as G-Land – Bali’s number one hotspot for surfing.

This idea is perfect if you’re a couple of keen surfers. But before you take to the waves, it’s the helicopter ride that poses the best opportunity to pop the question. Wait until you’re sky-high with unforgettable birds-eye views of Bali and Java’s mountainous landscape.

When you’re worn out from riding G-Land’s world-class surf breaks, make sure you head back to the Four Seasons resort for dinner at Taman Wantilan, a special Asian-Western fusion restaurant made even better with the fun interactive element of its open theatre-kitchen style of dining.

A Bali engagement doesn’t necessarily need to be lavish and extravagant – often the best ways to pop the question are the sweetest, most joyful moments when it’s just the two of you alone. Plus, proposing in private away from crowds of onlookers might be what your partner wants, so choose wisely!

If you do want to propose in your private suite, we think Jumana Bali Ungasan Resort is home to some of Bali’s best accommodations – especially the wonderful Garden View Pool Villas.

With your own pool and private gardens to play with, no doubt there’ll be plenty of spur-of-the-moment opportunities to do it, even when you’re just lounging around the pool enjoying each other's company with cocktail room service on the way. Every day is special enough for a proposal when you’re living in this much luxury.

Will Bali’s resort staff help with proposal planning?

Of course. All of the five-star resorts on this list can accommodate your needs and desires when planning the perfect proposal.

Don’t struggle alone – staff will be more than happy to assist in any way they can, whether it’s suggesting the most romantic spots around the resort or bringing up a well-timed bottle of champagne chilling in a bucket of ice.

What are the most romantic date ideas in Bali?

Need a few date ideas to get some romantic sparks igniting before you propose in Bali? Here are some of the best places to take them that’ll blow their mind:

  • Take a romantic stroll to the Uluwatu Temple, thought to protect the island from evil spirits.
  • Trek through the Sacred Monkey Forest where you’ll come up close and personal with macaques and see some of Bali’s most stunning rice field vistas.
  • Enjoy a cruise around Bali’s surrounding islands and tuck into an onboard 3-course meal.
  • Enjoy a couples massage at your resort spa, hand in hand.
  • See the sunrise at the top of Mount Batur.
