It's time for adventure in Costa Rica

Adventure | 22 December 2022

Costa Rica is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. It's home to five percent of the planet’s species and is famously known for its sustainable contributions with more than 98 percent of its energy being renewable. However, this tropical paradise is also iconic for its adventure-based activities, natural beauty and bucketlist wildlife experiences making it the perfect holiday destination for families. This marvellous location boasts picture perfect beaches, dramatic waterfalls, lush jungles, towering volcanos and bubbling hot springs. Mother Nature built a playground for all ages to explore. From families with young children through to independent teenagers, there's an activity to excite all to help create a once-in-a-lifetime getaway that fuses nature with adventure, peppered with some wildlife encounters.

A thrill seekers playground

Adrenaline junkies of all ages will love the adventure filled activities in Costa Rica. Located in the Alajuela province, you will find the Mistico Hanging Bridges Park. It’s home to an abundance of bridges suspended above the treetops with views over Arenal Lake and Arenal Volcano. Also, be sure to visit Arenal Ecoglide Park where those aged five years and over can watch the jungle pass beneath them as they zipline above the trees, balance on ropes and even try free falling. Other rainforest adventures can be experienced in multiple national parks including Braulio Carillo which is perfect for younger children, or Jaco Beach where teens and adults can try more of the extreme sports including quad biking and skydiving!

Those who prefer water-based fun will love the Guanacaste province. As well as the expected kayaking, paddleboarding and snorkelling experiences, families can try something different and book a slot at Iguana Surf Tamarindo; a surfing school to help beginners ride the waves. Alternatively, we suggest spending some time with Papagayo Sportfishing, a family-friendly company that does in-shore fishing excursions where trips can be as long or short as you wish. The company provides everything you need from rods to lifejackets and onboard snacks making for the perfect daytime activity.

And once you're day of exhilarating fun comes to an end, be sure to retreat back to one of many luxury hotels that Costa Rica has to offer. What better way to unwind than in your private pool.

Get lost in nature

Costa Rica allows you to get close to nature and you can experience this at La Fortuna, a place famous for its well-known waterfall. The crystal-clear water tumbles down a 250-foot drop, and its pool is the perfect swim spot. It is located at the base of a dormant volcano offering stunning views and optimal picture opportunities. Why not take a picnic and find a place to sit and enjoy this geological wonder?

Speaking of volcanos, make the journey to Arenal National Park where you can set eyes on Arenal Volcano. Whilst you can’t climb it, families who have their walking shoes on can trail around the lava fields and Lake Arenal. Adventurers can also enjoy the parks more daredevil pastimes such as white-water rafting, ziplining and exploring the nature sanctuary.

Families also mustn't forget the hot springs. The volcanic formations have caused thermal pools and therapeutic mud to form, creating nature’s very own spa. One of the best hot spring spots suitable for families is at The Springs Resort and Spa. Here you can enjoy views of Arenal Volcano as you relax in pools that sit between 28 and 40 degrees. Children will also have a blast in the kid friendly pool which features a water flume.

Discover the wild side

Calling all animal lovers! Costa Rica has a vast list of species that you can spot in the wild and have up-close encounters with. Your first stop should be the Butterfly Conservation near La Fortuna. Here you can enjoy an excellent family-friendly guided experience called The Metamorphosis Tour. You will wander through exhibits that highlight how wildlife endures the natural environment, before heading on a rainforest river walk where you can see sloths, monkeys, toucans and parrots. If you're not lucky enough to spot cute sloths in their natural habitat, then head to the village of Cahuita, where you can visit the local sloth sanctuary and learn more about this fascinating creature.

For those who love marine life, Tortuguero National Park must be on your itinerary. The beautiful white sand beaches are the ideal place to get up close and personal with the large variety of turtles. Go between November and March and you may even see the babies hatching. However, wildlife fans final stop should be Monteverde’s Cloud Forest. The park boasts treetop trails that lead through the clouds. But, you won’t be walking alone. More than 100 mammal species, 400 types of bird and 1,200 amphibians and reptiles will keep you company.

As you can see, Costa Rica is the perfect adventure destination for your next family holiday. If you want to see everything this diverse country has to offer, we recommend booking a Winged Boots Costa Rica tour to get the full experience.
