  • Published 13 January 2018

If you’re on the hunt for an award-winning Indian hotel, call off the search

India: it’s a country that’ll delight the senses. From the majestic Taj Mahal to the delicious smells and tastes of the country’s most famed outsource, its food, India certainly doesn’t disappoint as a travel destination. But where should you stay while visiting this wonderful country? Having recently won the World’s Leading Hotel at the World Travel Awards in December 2017, The Oberoi Udaivilas in Rajasthan is a good place to start. But what is it about this luxury hotel that makes it deserve such a high accolade? Is it the world-class cuisine? Perhaps it is the spacious accommodation or maybe it’s the sumptuous spa sanctuary? We caught up with Mekhla Singh, a representative for the hotel to find out more.

A true luxury resort in every sense of the word, The Oberoi Udaivilas truly sets the bar for deluxe hotels. “Guests can expect absolute luxury accompanied by the legendary Oberoi service to make your stay memorable,” says Mekhla Singh. ““We offer the best combination of luxury, service, experiences and food. Located in a tranquil and salubrious setting, The Oberoi Udaivilas, is conceived as a traditional Indian palace. Magnificently recreating the romance of the past and yet completely in-keeping with the 21st century, this luxury hotel reflects its inspiration,”” she adds. And she certainly isn’t wrong. This regal theme is fused with authentic Indian design to create a haven away from home that can be felt from the moment you step through its front doors. From the lobby through to the rooms and suites, ultra-comfort and a high-class finish is paramount throughout.

No stay in The Oberoi Udaivilas is complete without mesmerising views. If you opt for the hotel’s suite options, you’ll get to relish Lake Pichola and City Palace scenes as well as the luxury of a private pool. The accommodation options here are luxe, unique and truly showcase the beauty of the area. “Our luxury hotel in Udaipur has an intricate layout of interconnecting domes and corridors that reflects the layout of Udaipur itself; whose seven lakes are linked by canals,” explains Mekhla. It's this intricate attention to detail as well as the fusion of traditional décor with modern touches that guarantees a magical stay from check-in to check-out.
If you’re undecided on what accommodation to go for, the Kohinoor Suite is sure to fulfil your every need. Boasting a courtyard bathing in sunlight and a second courtyard lit by chandeliers, the glamour is high with this choice. Two bedrooms are added into the mix making the suite perfect for families and larger groups. Plus, each bedroom comes equipped with a deluxe en-suite. The crème de la crème is the private pool found with this choice along with an al fresco dining area so you can tuck into some room service if you need a break from paddling.

The perfect location

From a private city tour by boat, ideal for couples, to the junior chef and little bartender programmes for children, all travellers can expect fun-filled days at The Oberoi Udaivilas. Safa tying, henna painting and camel rides are also on hand for a true immersion into the country’s culture. Along with swimming pools, magnificent restaurants and a whole host of amenities, ultimate rest and relaxation is ensured every step of the way. With the resort being just four kilometres from the city centre, there are a whole host of local attractions to keep you busy too. The Crystal Gallery is just 20-minutes away by car and boasts easily one of the most beautiful collections of cut-glass including chandeliers, crockery and so much more. The Jagdish Temple is also just a 15-minute walk from the gallery and is a true architectural delight that has been a place of Hindu worship since 1651.
However, the most visited site near to The Oberoi Udaivilas is the City Palace of Udaipur. Found on the banks of Lake Pichola, this grand architectural beauty has 11 palaces inside the main City Palace, each built by a different ruler. One-of-a-kind paintings, ornaments and other decadent interiors can be found throughout the building so to really understand the history behind every nook and cranny we highly recommend a private tour.

Tuck in

If all this exploration has you tired out, the hotel’s eateries are certain to deliver. With three restaurants offering a range of Indian and international cuisine, all your senses will be well and truly tantalised. “Chandni offers traditional Rajasthani, North Indian and international cuisine,” says Mekha. Paired with an al fresco dining location as well as magnificent views of Udaipur, this choice makes for a great date night of relaxation underneath the stars.
No two meals will be the same at the Oberoi thanks to the vast menu choices, daily music performances and variety of seating options. Various dining packages are available including afternoon tea and private dining on the lakeside so if you want to treat your other half or loved ones to an unforgettable experience while in India, you can call off the search. It’s this type of gastronomic diversity that could well have been the hotel’s golden ticket to success. From a diverse dinner menu to its variation of dining destinations, you’re made to feel comfortable and relaxed even before you sit down at the table.
Post-dinner drinks and chic areas to catch-up with friends are on offer at The Bar. “The Bar is a wonderful setting to relax with an aperitif complete with lake and garden views to enjoy,” Mekhla says. “We also have a number of bespoke private dining venues that can host between two and 70 guests, perfect for a romantic dinner or a lavish celebration.”

Surrender your senses

"The Oberoi Udaivilas presents the ideal haven to indulge in rejuvenating spa therapies"

Wellness is one of the main drawing points to the area, and The Oberoi Udaivilas is no exception. “Spread over 50 acres of rambling landscape on the banks of Lake Pichola, the hotel features courtyards and walkways, gentle rippling fountains, reflecting pools and verdant gardens,” Mekha describes. However, it’s the sumptuous spa that really turns the dial on guest’s relaxation mode.
For times when you really want to unwind, the spa is nothing short of spectacular. “The Oberoi Udaivilas presents the ideal haven to indulge in rejuvenating spa therapies and participate in private yoga, meditation and Paranayam sessions,” Mekhla says. Ayurvedic techniques are used throughout giving a traditional feel to all facials, massages and body rituals. This particular technique massages the body in the direction of the body hair increasing blood flow and in turn helping with pain relief, stiff joints and tiredness. What’s more, natural oils are used in every treatment to heal and soothe the body from head to toe.
The Spirit of Ayurveda treatment definitely caught our attention. This three-hour ritual starts off with a stimulating massage to invigorate and energise before a hot herbal pouch massage aimed to ease the muscles and any tension gets underway. Warm Ayurvedic oil is then put onto the third eye to cleanse the mind before the therapy all wrapped up with a calming bath to bring you back to Earth.

Showered with success

Talking about winning the World’s Leading Hotel Award for 2017, Mekhla says: “No win is possible without the hard work and perseverance of its team members. Hence, the best way to celebrate a win is by honouring and recognising their efforts.” It’s this positivity and passion for customer service that has made The Oberoi Udavilas the luxury hotel that it is. Whether you’re a holiday-maker that wants to immerse yourself in the culture, tuck into delectable dishes or simply paddle in the swimming pool all day, you won’t be disappointed here.
