Found on the south-west tip of Lake Michigan in northern Illinois, you can expect sky-high buildings contrasting with 580 parks and 33 beaches. Home to the first ever skyscraper, the views are truly wonderful when at the top of one and showcase the extensive history that the city is marvelled for. The 360 Chicago Observation in the John Hancock Building is perfect for grand vistas complete with a tilting ride that is sure to thrill adrenaline junkies. Enjoy looking down on the grand hustle and bustle with much of the architecture featuring a prevalence of limestone due to the large quarry found just south of the city in Thornton. Expect custom limestone and marble features in many of the hotels, restaurants and sights throughout Chicago.
 
This destination is also fantastic for families, with a whole host of activities to enjoy including a zoo, aquarium and even a pier full of attractions that is sure to keep everyone entertained. A 10-minute drive from the pier will take you to Magnificent Mile which is 1.6 kilometres of pure, unadulterated shopping full of high end boutiques and amazing department stores that’re sure to keep any shopaholic happy.
 
Need something to post for Instagram? The Cloud Gate, located centrally in Millennium Park, is a silver bean of wonderment that is sure to get the likes rolling in.

  • The Art Institute of Chicago is home to phenomenal exhibitions that keep travellers and locals coming back for more. Situated near Millennium Park, take some time out and experience arguably the greatest Impressionist collection outside of Paris.   • For stunning views and picture-perfect moments, the 360 Chicago Observation Deck, found on the 94th floor of the John Hancock Building, is something every holiday maker should do at least once. The experience starts from the very bottom where you whizz up in one of the fastest elevators in the world, before riding TILT, a tilting platform that will well and truly test your nerve. A bar and café is on hand should you need some Dutch courage, complete with beautiful sunsets that will keep you grounded.

     
  • Joe’s Stone Crab first opened in Miami Beach in 1913. Now, there are many establishments worldwide with Chicago being lucky enough to have one. The well-loved chain is owned by Lettuce Entertain You Enterprise and boasts a fantastic menu of signature prime steaks, seafood and even good old Fish and Chips if you want some home comforts.
     
  • Alternatively, minimalist fine dining and international cuisine can be found at Alinea, one of the most popular restaurants in the area. You will have to reserve with this choice. Your food will taste as good as it looks, and with every floor hosting different menus, every guest is ensured a unique and intimate experience.
     
  • Sports-lovers must make a stop-off at Michael Jordan’s Steak House. Owned by the famed basketball player, succulent meats and mouth watering sides ensures true American flavour with every mouthful. Found on Magnificent Mile, this is a great lunchtime treat after shopping ‘til you drop.

     
  • The most well-known landmark in Chicago is easily Cloud’s Gate, more commonly known as ‘The Bean’. Designed by British artist Anish Kapoor, this silver marvel stands proud in Millennium Park and is definitely an Instagram moment to remember.
     
  • With more than 32,000 animals, the Shedd Aquarium is perfect for families wanting to admire beautiful marine life. Dolphins, whales, sea otters and stingrays can all be seen swimming about along with seasonal shows so you can truly get up close and personal.
     
  • Navy Pier is many holiday maker’s top attraction due to the plethora of what’s on offer at this seaside retreat. A 15-minute drive from Shedd Aquarium, the site has been greeting visitors since 1995. Museums, restaurants, shops and even a Ferris wheel can be enjoyed here. You will be wandering around for hours, especially through the Crystal Gardens which houses more than 80 palm trees.
