Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura, the second largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, lies just 100km from the African coast, nestled by the Atlantic Ocean. A top holiday destination for many Brits, thanks to its year-round sunshine and stretches of golden sands, your luxury break is just a four-hour plane ride away … so pack your bags and let your Fuerteventura adventure begin.

Fuerteventura is sea and sand in the purest of forms. Discover an unspoiled coastline, turquoise waters and striking volcanic backdrops. With beaches of all kinds, the choices here are endless. Whether you want a secluded beach cove surrounded by cliffs, a sunbathing sanctuary or a spot for epic windsurfing, this island has it all.

Long sunny days, strong wind and waves up to two metres high make Fuerteventura a surfer’s paradise. Its watersport opportunities are one of the reasons travellers are lured to return year after year.

There are striking similarities to the Island’s neighbouring coastline, not only with the landscape but with its traditional Northern African style flat roofs collecting rainfall. You will also see rural villages merged with religious landmarks and Spanish style architecture. Steeped in history, the beautiful Fuerteventura is an enchanting mix of old and new with waterparks, bars and golf courses keeping holiday dreams alive.

Food in Fuerteventura is fresh and simple. The culinary scene is more about the catch of the day and sampling locally grown produce than dressing for dinner. You can expect for your taste buds to be seduced with delicious seafood, tapas and Canarian potatoes. Most restaurants are laid back and somewhat rustic, while the top-notch hotels usually offer multiple on-site restaurants that showcase a wealth of Spanish and international fare.

Resorts among the island are as luxury as they come. Most are designed to cater to families with a wide range of facilities including tennis courts, a golf course, spa, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and action-packed kids’ clubs as well as watersports and beach games. Adult-only retreats are also available for those yearning for a quiet oasis.

Excursions on offer in Fuerteventura are excellent. Visit the stunning town of Caleta de Fuste, stroll by spectacular sand dunes, marvel at volcanic landmarks, and practise your swing on one of the fantastic golf courses. Alternatively, take a catamaran cruise and discover the magical marine life on the quaint islet of Lobos. Why not enjoy some scenic snorkelling? You might get a chance to spot a dolphin. In the atmospheric Corralejo, have your go at watersports in the azure sea or spend the day at Corralejo Natural Dune Park, where you will discover island wildlife at its greatest.

Rest assured you will become mesmerised by Fuerteventura's unrivalled rugged beauty, gorgeous coastlines, and easy going pace of life.

  • Overlooking El Cotillo’s small harbour, El Mirador is a seafood-focused restaurant guaranteeing fresh cuisine and delicious flavours. Also offering a variety of vegetarian dishes, as well as paella and a wealth of tapas, this one is sure to tantalise your taste buds.

  • For something truly gourmet, Volcano sits in the heart of Caleta de Fuste and is your go to for Galician sirloin, crispy pork and mouth-watering Monkfish. Don’t forget to save some space for desert, how does home-made apple pie and fresh cream sound?

  • We recommend checking out the French run, La Vaca Azul in fishing harbour El Cotillo and asking for the fish of the day! The garlic prawns and grilled seabass will knock your socks off.

  • Lap up the island breeze and grab your wetsuit because the strong winds around some parts of the island make it one of the greatest in the world for surfing. It’s also a great spot for kitesurfing and windsurfing too so if you’re keen to pick up a new sporting hobby, Fuerteventura will certainly accommodate.

  • Known as one of the best destinations in Europe for watersports, Playa Barca, sits in the south of the island and plays host to the windsurf world cup each year.

  • Thanks to the year-round warm climate, the consistent temperature of the water makes diving and snorkelling a pleasure. With an abundance of sea life dive in head first to discover the underwater marine fantasies. There are lots of harbours dotted around the island so picturesque sailing and fishing trips are a given. If you don’t fancy getting wet take a catamaran Fuerteventura cruise. For the ultimate water experience check out FKS watersports centre located in Corralejo and Flag Beach Windsurf Centre.

  • For a fun, family day out we recommend taking the little ones to Oasis Park Fuerteventura. This zoo-meets-botanical-garden on the south side of the island, allows guests to encounter nature in many ways. Home to everything from hippos and elephants to giraffes and zebras this one’s a must. Watch a parrot show, feed a giraffe or ride a camel… the interactive animal events are second-to-none. There is also a playground for kids as well as a farm.

  • Acua Water Park, is located at the village of Corralejo and beckons the entire family to get wet ‘n’ wild. With a wide variety of daring slides, family pools and leisurely Jacuzzis soak up the rays while you cool off in either way you like. The rushing river and wave pool will not disappoint. Should you want to chill out there is a solarium and relaxing area as well as smaller slides for the younger swimmers. For the brave hearts, we recommend trying the Kamikaze.
