Take a tour around L’aventure du Sucre
Get ready for a sugary holiday injection that the sweet-toothed among you are going to love with an expedition to L’Aventure du Sucre, a site dedicated to Mauritius’ sugar-making heritage. Found in the serenely beautiful Beau Plan Estate in the island’s oldest village, this museum-cum-factory evokes the aura of a bygone era with views of the nearby Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens.
In this tranquil estate, you’ll wander through avenues of sprawling bougainvillea and coconut palms alongside a glimmering lake before reaching the enormous factory. One of the most spectacular tourist sites around, the venue has sugarcane hedges running right up to the front doors of the recently restored building. Once through the entranceway, you’ll be pitched into a mysterious new world where ancient machines are decked with a thousand lights. There are big screens playing informational films, a floating barge that whistles like a railway engine and a superb interactive tour, all awaiting you inside…
Especially for families with little ones in tow, on your way into the exhibition, there are booklets available for children between seven and 12, which include a variety of games and puzzles to help them get involved in the fascinating history of Mauritius and its sugar production. Tiny tots will also enjoy spotting some of the factory’s favourite mascots, Raj the Martin (a common bird on the island) and Florise the Mongoose, both of whom will accompany families on their museum tours, answering questions, posing riddles and teaching kids about their role as protectors of the cane crops.
