Imagine – you step off the plane well-rested, bright-eyed and bushy tailed and ready to embark on a lifetime of adventures. Yeah, right! With bloodshot eyes, tousled hair and slightly shaky from sitting down for 10 hours, you’ll stumble into arrivals and immediately regret your decision to fly around the world. We all know that jetlag is a nightmare and no matter how many times we fly, we can’t quite seem to adjust accordingly. That’s why Winged Boots has compiled five top tips for overcoming time zone troubles that will have you sleeping peacefully at the drop of a hat.

Avoid caffeine, sugary drinks and alcohol before and during the flight

This one is pretty obvious. With alcohol being a diuretic, you’re not only more likely to be getting up to go to the toilet every five minutes, you’ll also get dehydrated quickly. Sugary drinks also keep you awake just as much as coffee so it’s always best to stick to water or juice while you’re in the sky. Try to resist that glass of champagne in the departure lounge too, as drinking before and after the flight can increase your symptoms of jetlag.

This is also a basic one but very easily forgotten. Upon boarding your flight, adjust your watch, smartphone and other gadgets to the time zone of your arrival destination. This will put you in the mind frame of adjusting to the correct time and doing activities on the plane accordingly. For example, if its 1pm local time, a seven-hour nap probably isn’t the best thing to do. Adjust your mealtimes too but the airline will most likely serve food in line with this. Remember, jet lag affects your appetite as well as your sleeping pattern so try not to skip meals. Oh, and turn off your alarm. There’s nothing worse than a rude awakening by your regular ‘get up for work’ alarm at ridiculous-o’clock in the morning while you’re trying to get some shut-eye on the plane.

Lavender is your new best friend

Has jetlag got you tossing and turning in your hotel room? Us at Winged Boots feel your pain but one handy travel essential will have you feeling calm and falling into a deep slumber. Lavender spray usually comes in small bottles of 100 millilitres of less, making it perfect for slotting into your hand luggage. A few sprays on your pillow and around the area of your hotel bed will unwind and relax you in no time. Check out our Winged Boots Wisdom of our top picks of lavender-based products:

This Works - Deep Sleep Pillow Talk (£20)

Stress Less is perfect for those who get a bit anxious while flying, designed to steady the nerves with the help of essential oils such as chamomile, eucalyptus and lavender, of course. It comes in a rollerball that applies directly onto the skin, such as the wrists or temples and reduces insomnia and soothes any tension you may be feeling. The Deep Sleep Pillow Spray ensures a rest that’s out of this world, allowing you to wake up the next morning feeling as refreshed as can be.

The White Company - White Lavender Pillow Mist (£15)

Pure lavender is expertly blended with aromatic basil and Sicilian lemon to create the most beautiful scent that will send you in to a hypnotic slumber. The best part? It doubles as an air and linen freshener! Just a few spritzes and the delicious smell will fill your hotel suite with pure bliss all throughout the day.

Lush - Sleepy Lotion (£13.95)

Okay, so this one isn’t a spray but it definitely works wonders – trust us. Lather this sweet-smelling body lotion on after a long bath, put on your pyjamas and feel the magic of relaxation take over your body. Combining organic cocoa butter with lavender water and almond oil, this all-natural product will be your travel companion for evermore.
