Visit the Perito Moreno Glacier

The Perito Moreno Glacier is located in Los Glaciares National Park, around 80km from El Calafate, Argentina. It is one of the most famous glaciers in the world because it is the third largest reserve of fresh water on the planet, surpassed only by ice sheets in the Antarctic and Greenland. On top of that, unlike most glaciers across the world that are shrinking in size because of global warming, this impressive natural spectacle is one of the few ice fields that is maintaining a constant mass; accumulating size at the same rate as loss!

This glacier is truly a magnificent sight, measuring 30km in length and 5km width. It is easy to understand why it is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the whole of southern Patagonia. On site there is a large visitor centre which includes a circular pathway along the southern flank of the glacier. Other independent touring companies also offer their own guided tours suitable for all abilities. From short hikes that last around an hour and a half to much grander expeditions where visitors can spend up to five hours exploring the icy terrain, there is a range of exciting opportunities for every level of fitness and ability.

One thing is for sure, a trip to Perito Moreno Glacier will be a breath-taking experience and one you certainly won’t forget in a hurry.

Winged Boots Wisdom

Every 20-30 minutes a small-scale rupture takes place, especially in the afternoon when the ice warms. The excitement is electrifying on the ice, and cheers often ring out across the glacier when a section of ice drops into Lago Argentino Lake. From a viewing platform, travellers are able to observe the large shards of ice drop into the water followed by an enormous splash that reverberates wide across the lake – it is truly a sight to behold!
