A ski trip allows you to trade your usual holiday surroundings of cerulean waters and powder-soft sands for snowy slopes and alpine trees, and Europe is renowned for having some of the most popular and luxurious ski destinations in the world. From chic resorts and designer shopping in France to the spirited après-ski sessions in Austria or the laidback vibes of the Italian Alps, there truly is something for every group, ability level, and off-piste interest.

With so many choices reachable with just a short flight time, you can easily spend long weekends or extended breaks exploring spectacular mountains and snow-white slopes without ever getting bored. Whether you consider yourself a pro or this is your first time trying out a pair of skis or a snowboard, our expert team can help plan a tailor-made holiday for you and your party.

Here are 16 top tips for booking a luxury European ski break.

Luxury ski accommodation - Le Chalet, Lech, Austria

Best ski resorts Austria

1. Be aware of varying season lengths
The ski season in France, Italy, Switzerland, and Austria only really gets into the swing in December and ends around mid-April, so bear that in mind when booking your next ski break. Travelling further north to Finland or Sweden can extend the season from October to May.

2. Take ability levels into consideration
Europe has resorts for all levels of ski ability. France is a popular go-to destination for beginners. Whether you decide to jet down the pistes of Courcheval, Meribel or Val Thorens, there are plenty of green and blue slopes which are the best to build your confidence. Experts will find their new stomping ground in Switzerland thanks to its steep mountains and abundance of black and red runs while Italy offers a mixture of pistes for intermediates or groups that have different levels of ability.

For a varied ski holiday with a mix of both hilly slopes and snow parks for skiing and snowboarding as well as many cross-country routes for all abilities, check out Finland and Sweden. Resorts in these destinations are far less touristy and will provide visitors with a much more private and escapist experience. Plus, these are some of the best places in the world to spot the Northern Lights, which appear almost every other night during the ski season - presenting an excellent opportunity to tick off two bucket list items in one trip!

3. Choose your accommodation wisely

It might sound obvious, but choosing accommodation based on the ability levels within your party - as well as your interests and how much time you plan to spend on the slopes (or in the après-ski bars) - will make or break your ski trip. In terms of hotels, it’s always best to stay near a ski lift to guarantee you’re never too far from all the action. For beginners, opt for a hotel that’s close to the bottom of the mountain. Many of these properties have access to exclusive car services that can take either yourself, your equipment or both back from the slopes. First-timers are often caught off guard at just how heavy some of the equipment can be.

4. Opt for a private ski guide to unlock hidden slopes
Upgrade your ski experience by booking a private guide who knows the exclusive, lesser-known slopes reserved for VIPs. From untouched powder runs to uncrowded paths, this offers a bespoke, crowd-free adventure.

5. Arrange a chalet wine tasting with local sommeliers
Rather than simply visiting wineries, bring the wine experience to your chalet. Many alpine sommeliers offer private, in-chalet tastings with rare local wines, delivering both a luxury and authentically regional experience. Plenty of high-end ski chalets can facilitate this for you, so reach out to our Personal Experience Team if you are interested in adding this to your itinerary.

6. Having said that...
Watch your alcohol consumption. Yes, you’re on holiday and those Schnapps-filled après-ski sessions are all part of the experience, however, due to the change in altitude alcohol can affect you in ways it otherwise wouldn’t back home. So make sure you pace yourself.

7. Book ahead
Another top tip is to pre-book as much as you can, including lessons, equipment hire and ski passes. No matter your destination or how many ski school options there are, things often get booked up well in advance - especially during the school holidays. To avoid disappointment, secure lessons at least a couple of months prior to travelling and when it comes to hiring equipment be sure to research the best stores in the area. If you are booking with Winged Boots, you are in luck as we are more than happy to assist with all arrangements on your behalf, so all you need to do is show up on the snow!

8. Listen to the experts
Even if you’ve been skiing before, it is wise to always take the advice of the ski experts whether that be an instructor or equipment professional. Even if you think your boots are too tight, trust us, they’re probably not - and if they’re loose, your bruised shins will soon let you know.

9. Curate a private après-ski spa experience right on the slopes
Arrange for a mobile spa setup on the mountainside to enjoy treatments with incredible views right after skiing. Book private massages, warm pools, and champagne to elevate your après-ski to unmatched luxury. This is a highly-customised option available only at top-tier resorts or luxury chalet services. Some alpine destinations offer unique setups like pop-up saunas, heated massage beds, or outdoor hot tubs in scenic, private mountain locations.

10. Book a helicopter for dawn or dusk mountain flights
For an unforgettable perspective, arrange a private helicopter flight at dawn or dusk to see the mountains bathed in golden light. This exclusive experience allows you to appreciate the stunning landscape from a rare, scenic angle.

You’d typically arrange experiences such as those mentioned above through your chalet concierge or a luxury experience provider, who coordinates on-site massage therapists, portable spas, or heated gazebos to deliver relaxing self-indulgence surrounded by the alpine landscape. Winged Boots' Personal Experience Team can work with you and local suppliers to make this and other equally unique requests a reality.

11. Replenish energy levels
Carry a snack in your pocket. When hunger hits on the side of a mountain you don’t want to be miles away from the nearest hillside restaurant or café. Avoid getting hangry by having a sugary snack or chocolate bar to tide you over and keep energy levels up.

12. Stay hydrated
With the combination of afternoon après and days of long activity, don’t underestimate the amount of water you will need to keep your levels topped up.

13. Don't overstretch yourself
Transfer times are incredibly important when booking a ski getaway, especially if you’re only going for a few days. Choose a resort that’s too far away from the airport and you might spend most of your time travelling to your destination instead of skiing. Anywhere from one to two-and-a-half hours is standard when it comes to ski transfers in Europe.

14. Arrange private lift access to avoid crowds
For an exclusive and efficient experience, some resorts offer private lift arrangements for top-tier guests, minimising wait times. It’s perfect for those looking to make the most of each ski day without interruption.

15. Arrange a private après-ski Jazz or acoustic concert at your chalet

Enhance your après-ski by hosting an intimate live music performance back at your chalet. Many luxury resorts can arrange private concerts with local jazz musicians or acoustic artists, creating a cosy, exclusive ambience perfect for unwinding.

16. Take an alpine photography tour with a professional guide

Capture your journey by hiring a local photographer to guide you to the most photogenic spots across the resort. With insider knowledge, they’ll help you navigate hidden trails and scenic views for truly unforgettable, high-quality photos, ensuring you return home with beautiful memories to look back on forever.
