A pretty new kid on the block when it comes to hotel chains – it stamped its mark on the scene in 2005 – Cinnamon is determined to make the most of Sri Lanka’s growing tourism spotlight and is doing so proudly with the likes of this modern luxury hotel.
The vistas alone make it worth the three-and-a-half-hour journey from the airport. With picture-perfect views of a river and a backdrop of stunning mountains, there’s certainly no filter needed for this holiday.

There’s 121 room and suite options altogether here at this modern Cinnamon property. The colour palette is pretty much magnolia edged with splashes and dashes of rich reds. It’s clean lines, unfussy, and yet certainly on the luxury scale. Rooms offer you some great views of the river and gardens, or push the boat out for private balconies and terraces.
There’s 95 of these at the property, and they’re all comfortably presented, despite having fairly few flashy additions. If you’re on the ground floor, you’ll open out on to the garden, where evening barbecues are possible. Choose from one king or twin beds.
If you want a taste of the new wing of the hotel, opt for one of the 24 Deluxe Rooms. These have great views, are larger in size, and give you the option of having an additional bed if you require it. Simple, but stylish with it. Oh, and some have incredible river views so don’t forget your Nikon.
The top-tier option at this resort might not feel the same gold-club option you’d expect of some Indian Ocean properties, but it is certainly more refined and plush. You’ll get more space, your own terrace or balcony, and two bathrooms, plus a living area.
At the bend of the Mahaweli River, the Citadel Kandy has a beautiful position. It’s great for views of the river, for getting to the city, for forest-hill landscapes and privacy and seclusion. Put simply, it’s just magical. That said, it is 3.5 hours from the international airport.
Given the recent attention to the décor at the hotel, it feels modern, welcoming and a really nice place to dine romantically, or with friends and family. There are two main restaurants, but also ‘destination dining’ or ‘in-room’ options, should you choose those. Café C is sophisticated and romantic, so perfect for a couple or intimate group. Panorama is bright, light, great for the family, and you’re sure to be mesmerised by the view.
Who cares what food they serve when the panorama of this place is such a stunning reach-out-and-touch-it view of the flowing river? Food-wise, it’s perfect for foodies, families and just all round fussy types. In short it’s global treats, buffet style.

Cinnamon wants you to know from the outset that this isn’t a crazy leisure-tastic resort where you’ll be bouncing from climbing wall to powerboat. What it has in its favour on the leisure side however, is nature’s own.
The landscape makes it a perfect playground for exploration, so this is one for those who love luxury, but want to experience the hills, the river, the culture, and the all-round serenity of somewhere that’s very pleased to boast its Green-Globe certifications.
Okay, so you had to travel a little further out to find this beautiful spot. But you know what, the fact that you did means that you’ve got a rich and luscious amount of natural playground within reach – and you’d be crazy kids not to enjoy it.
There’s several expedition options, so we suggest you either take off on some walking trails of your own, or go on the Forest Trail at the Udawatta Kele Sanctuary. The place was once a royal park, forbidden to commoners, but guess what – they’ll let anyone in these days!
