The Residence, Mauritius ticks all of those boxes… and a few more. Yes, it oozes elegant luxury, and the super-soft sand is as white as you could ever have imagined, but it also delivers a certain Colonial style, which prevents this stunning resort from being a mere Magnolia option in Mauritius.

ACCOMMODATION

While we’ve already noted the colonial style here, a nod to this resort’s heritage, you certainly wouldn’t say it lacks a contemporary edge. The accommodation is simply decorated but oozes style, and comes packaged with plenty of sumptuous furnishings. If you’re nudging up the budget you’ll find Nespresso machines and four posters. An adult-only area of the hotel accommodation means you can choose to be a little fussier about who’s next door – should you wish to.

With views over the tropical gardens, air conditioning, Wi-Fi and a large marble bathroom, this is just what the doctor ordered after a day of tricky sunbathing positions or watersports activities. There’s a living area with a desk, and you can choose from king or twin beds.

Location

  • Surrounded by the azure ocean, and on a mile-long white-sand beach, The Residence is on the east coast of Mauritius. While we know a lot of people love a holiday in a serene, tranquil destination like this so that they can lay back and ignore the world, but if you are something of a culture-vulture, it’s to be remembered that you’re within easy reach of two UNESCO World Heritage sites.

DINING

Given that Mauritius is regarded as a real combination of cultural influences, you can expect this to play out in the wonderful food options throughout your stay. You’ll feast on everything from Indian cuisine, to European, or Creole-style. There are three main eateries for you to choose from – some more formal than others – and also a bar, which serves afternoon tea and evening cocktails.

The Dining Room

Start the day here for a delicious buffet breakfast, and then watch the style and substance turn into a sumptuous dining experience by the pool, come sunset. White tablecloths and subtle lighting make this a romantic setting for couples in the evening.

The Verandah

You know what your Mum said… always avoid the sun between 12 and 3. Well, if that’s your approach to your sunbathing schedule, you can while away three hours in the relaxed setting of The Verandah, beneath a parasol. Food here is delicious, light and beautifully presented. Think toasted sandwiches, pizzas, and healthy salads or indulgent homemade ice-cream.

LEISURE

Diving, zip-lining, snorkelling, or lounging in the spa – you’ve got all the options right here to hand, and all can be carried out in an idyllic setting, within or beside crystal blue waters.

There are a few features among those offered here at The Residence for which you may have to wander slightly off-site, but we’re talking a mere matter of minutes.

Work up an appetite with watersports aplenty

It’s always disappointing when you get to an ocean-side holiday like this one and discover that the resort or hotel doesn’t actually include the entire catalogue of watersports for your participation.

Well, you can forget that niggle. Here, you’ll enjoy water-skiing, hobie cat sailing, kayaking diving, underwater walks – and you can even nip to the yacht club next door and head off on glass-bottomed boat trips. Tuition is available, and advance booking is definitely advised to ensure you don’t miss out.

Unwind underground

Guests highly rate the wonderful Sanctuary Spa here at The Residence. Positioned underground, it has eight treatment rooms in which you can enjoy all sorts of first-rate relaxation options, including a gold-infused firming facial (yes, really!).

If you follow the illuminated stone path, you’ll find yourself in a blissful yoga studio, so you don’t need to miss your morning fix before facing the day. The staff are exceptional, and the available packages of spa treatments is really and truly impressive. You can go back home feeling thoroughly blissed and beautified.

Take a trip of historic significance

If you are inclined to get a little more taste of the heritage here, we’d certainly suggest you pay a visit to the Black River Gorges National Park (available by booking with your concierge).

Here, you’ll see protected tropical trees – including the Mauritius ebony. It’s sometimes forgotten that this is an area of such great history and intrigue, and those who do take the time to explore via one of these historical trips, always return saying they’re very glad they did.
