The scenic hills of Ulusaba set the stage for one of the most spectacular safari resorts – Ulusaba Game Reserve. With lodges perched on rocky pinnacles overlooking the open plains of the Sabi Sands Wildlife Park, the views which this reserve offers are only the tip of one magnificent iceberg of splendour.

Owned by Sir Richard Branson, this private area offers three accommodation choices – Rock Lodge, Cliff Lodge and Safari Lodge which have 21 rooms and suites between them. Set in the midst of 33,000 acres of open bushveld, the resort takes its name from the Shangaan name meaning ‘place of little fear’ and has a rich historical connection with the Shangaan community.

Five-star luxury abounds in the details of the accommodations offered at Ulusaba, from the bed linens all the way down to the polished floors strewn with artfully placed rugs and carpets. Feel on top of the world in the Rock Lodge or hunker down for a cosy time beneath a canopy of trees in the Safari Lodge. For those wanting an extra dab of opulence, opt for the two-suite Cliff Lodge, part of the Rock Lodge but set apart from the central lodge for a little more seclusion.

DINING

Arguably the highlight of any holiday experience, the dining at Ulusaba will definitely leave you wanting more. There’s team of chefs working morning, noon and night to produce the most nutritious and delectable meals for your enjoyment. The renowned cooks produce a number of pan-African inspired dishes that are a bursting of fabulous flavours and which are continually refreshed and updated.

If you’re like us and get a bit peckish more than three times a day then don’t worry, there are six opportunities for dining. The best bit? All the meals are served in-lodge so you won’t have to go traipsing around trying to find restaurants or drive for miles to buy your own food.

Want to enjoy the view while you eat? Not a problem. There are three food venues that cater to any need from on-deck service to outside enclosures and a very chic dining room.

LEISURE

The real question with Ulusaba is what can’t you do? It has a little bit of all our favourite things here from wine tasting and star gazing to game drives and pool dives. If any of you are a little uncertain about spending your holiday in such a remote location then one day here will win you over completely. Live the high life with a helicopter trip or get down to some good old-fashioned sunbathing by the pool. Whatever your choice of activity, you’re in the very best of hands at Ulusaba.

Get some culture in you

Become a real explorer and get to know the area around Ulusaba as you take a day trip to the famous Panorama Route which can be found along the Drakensburg Escarpment. A blissful day out full of wonderful sights, experiences and opportunities to soak up the local culture, the tour is organised by experienced guides and features iconic cultural hotspots like Robber’s Grave, Blyde River Canyon and Lisbon Waterfalls.

If this hasn’t convinced you, then we know what will – the foodie stuff. The tour features light snacks and lunch at the Original Pancake Restaurant in Graskop where you’ll be supplied with ample portions of mouthwatering pancakes, refreshing salads and other soulful dishes of country fare.

Lose yourself to bliss

Are you left feeling exhausted from the constant excitement of staying in a wildlife park with adrenaline fuelled game drives? Then the Aroma Boma is a must. The spa provides a peaceful alternative to the hive of activity that is in constant motion around the lodges. It’s an ideal getaway if you need a break from it all. Just like everywhere else in the stunning Ulusaba, the spa offers unbeatable views across the savannah that will leave you breathless… or that could be the expert masseuse giving you a deep-tissue massage. Enjoy a range of relaxing treatments from facials and beauty rituals to rejuvenating muscle treatments and refreshing scrubs.

Take it easy

If you want something a little more relaxing than a tour or game drive but not as inactive as a spa day, then there are plenty of other down-time experiences that will be perfect for you.

Go for a refreshing morning swim to really start your day right and then spend the afternoon with a good book from the Ulusaba library collection, tanning on the poolside lounger. For an extra special experience, why not grab yourself a cocktail and take an evening dip in the heated lodge pool where you can watch the incredible African sunset? If swimming isn’t your thing then why not have a go at answering the age-old question, ‘what’s your sign?’ with a night spent gazing at the constellations above. Simply saunter over to the Ulusaba observatory which is complete with a state-of-the-art telescope and knowledgeable ranger on hand and begin your journey with the stars.
